Any news on the return of the 1309?
Last I saw was the Akron Railroad Club blog post in the middle of June, but that basically recapitulated what Mr. Garner told Trains Magazine -- so it's scarcely 'news' to people on this site.
We're approaching the revised completion date Mike Gresham mentioned back in November: July 24th, "between three to four months later than previously announced" at the time. I think it would be pointless to speculate whether the team will 'git 'r dun' or not by then -- either they will, or they won't.
I find it almost incomprehensible that there is no link to the gofundme page on the "official" Facebook page, or in the Akron blog page that mentions it, or apparently anywhere logical it can be searched for on the gofundme site itself. Supposedly it had some strange name that the person who set up the campaign thought was evocative for potential donors.
It is NOT a good thing when $260,000 of supposed potential budget is associated with a campaign that someone can't find when looking for it. I suggest somebody at WMSR think about dealing with this ASAP, since their own "Light My Fire, 1309!" campaign appears to be going slowly at best.
I'd also ask this question over on RyPN because people there are much more likely to be 'in the loop' or in a position to give true information rather than recycled rumors or poop.
So areyou saying the railroad lacks the funds to finish the job or is the fund raising independent of the job? Sorry just a bit confused?
It is my understanding that the 1309 restoration (Like ANY restoration) has required much more work, and therefore more money, than was originally predicted.
It's almost normal for this to happen to a restoration project.
Looking at photos which were taken a month or two ago, the 1309 was in a state that would make me believe it will not be done until probably Spring of 2017, or later.
That's life. I'm not gonna throw a fit over how long it's taking a project to be completed, or ask questions every 6 months on how it's going. I'll just sit patiently, donate what I can when I can to help, and wait for it to be done.
A watched pot never boils.
Thanks for the lecture.
Well Linn Moedinger of the Strasburg Railroad, who we can assume knows a thing or two about steam restorations, says a good restoration is always going to cost more than you think and take longer than you think, that is if you do it right. He also admitted he's never been right on an estimate yet.
1309's going to be back. Just gotta be patient.
ROBERT WILLISON Thanks for the lecture.
No problem.
The next restoration project that is brought to a conclusion 'On Time and On Budget' will be the first in the history of mankind.
Never too old to have a happy childhood!
That's for sure.
No matter how long it takes, it will be worth the wait...
I also always though the Vanderbilt tenders went well with these C&O 2-6-6-2s...
Here is 1307 at work...
Great looking locomotive's. She will look fine out on the fine
