Restoration Funds for 1218
Posted by Indy Rail on Monday, February 2, 2015 7:03 PM

Hey ya'll! I had a thought. What if somebody created a non for profit group dedicated to the restoration of the 1218. They could create a website, advertise, and hand out fliers at train shows. I would be up for this role but I simply don't have the time. This is how 611 got funds to be restored right? Also while your in the steam mode be sure to donate to 2124 and 3713. Thanks!

Considering the Virginia Museum of Transportation owns the 611 and 1218, I'm pretty sure they're swamped right now trying to get 611 going. They are still raising money to build the onsite maintenance facility so I doubt they would entertain the idea of raising the millions needed to get 1218 up and running. Plus, I'm sure they would not want an outside group handling 1218's restoration. I'm not saying it will never happen but we should give the folks at the VMT and Fire Up 611 some space to make sure one operating locomotive is a success and then we can see what else is possible.

It seems that the First Thing that should be asked is, Norfolk Southern, will you allow 1218 on your railroad if we rebuild her?

If 1218 was to be restored Nctm might want to overhaul her.  I remereber that we offer a home to 1218 at Spencer.  The people in Virginia did not want a *** N&W steam engine in no Southern RoundHouse.  I too would like to see all the former Southern and Norfolk & Western Steam engines running again.

It is my opinion the VMT would be interested in restoring 1218 but they have to finish with 611 first. Once 611 is successful in excursions, then 1218 may be considered. My suggestion is donate to the museum or to Fire Up 611, as the maintenance building planned for 611 (the main focus of the Fire Up 611 fundraising at present) may be used to house 1218 as well. But without these donations, this cannot happen.
