<p><span style="font-family: verdana,geneva;"><span style="font-size: small;">I know I have heard mention of that washing practice somewhere, but maybe only one mention of it. And it was explained as being a way to reduce the rolling friction that the sand would have on the rolling stock behind the locomotive, as Jay mentioned. </span></span></p>
