AC Ownership
Posted by nanaimo73 on Wednesday, June 7, 2006 8:05 AM

This is a summary of North American locomotives with Alternating Current traction motors. Earlier locomotives, such as the GP38AC, had alternating current transmissions, where an alternator replaced the generator. These became standard following Atlantic Coast Line C630 2011, built in July 1965.
I would like to make this as accurate as possible, and nit-picking is welcome.

"The biggest Alco in Canada out on the road! CP MLW M640 4744, built at the end of the horsepower wars of the 1970's, spent many years as a mechanical oddity in CP's fleet. When an electrical fire side-lined her in the early 1980's, most observers thought her days were over. However, CP gave her a new lease on life in 1985, working with ABB Brown-Boveri to install one of the first AC drive propulsion systems in a North American railroad application. 4744 is seen here at Rigaud, PQ on July 2, 1985 with CP dyno car 62, getting ready to tow three QNS&L SD40's set in dynamic braking as a simulated draw bar load."

"CP M640 4744 shows off its blunt and bulging tail end. Shown at Rigaud, PQ with dynamometer car 62, three QNS&L SD40-2's and CP SD40-2 6027. July 2, 1985."

4744 had an 18 cylinder 251F engine (built in Auburn, NY) and ran as a A1A-A1A after rebuilding. It is now preserved at the Canadian Railway Museum in Quebec.
"This 396,000 lb. 4000 hp. diesel-electric locomotive was originally equipped with 6 direct current (DC) traction motors and was used between the Crowsnest region and Vancouver in unit coal train service. It was transferred to Eastern Canada in the mid seventies. Rebuilt in 1984 with 4 alternating current (AC) traction motors. Testing by CPR and Browm Boveri Corp. paved the way for the wholesale development and production of AC traction by major Morth American locomotive builders in the 1990's. Capable of speed of up to 75 MPH, the 4744 continued in service until retired in March 1992."

F40PH 202 was badly damaged during July 1984 while on the Montrealer. It was rebuilt with Brown-Bovari traction motors at Beech Grove shops during February 1988. This also included a 24" longer body and larger wheels. During 1993 the unit was given by Amtrak to the AAR and went to the test track in Pueblo, Colorado.

From atsf.railfan.net-
"Designed and built by EMD between June 1973 and August 1974, the 150 SDP40F's were intended to replace the rag-tag assortment of none-too-healthy E and F units the passenger carrier had acquired from the freight railroads in 1971. Mechanically, the SDP40F was essentially an SD40-2, with a 16-cylinder 645E3 engine rated at 3000 hp. Several derailments on Burlington Northern, Chessie System, L&N and other roads were attributed to the locomotives. Freight railroads began to ban the locomotives from their property, and in 1977 the FRA imposed a nationwide speed restriction for the SDP40F's of 40 mph through curves of 2 degrees or more. By 1977, Amtrak had had enough, and the decision was made to trade the SDP40F's in on new F40PH locomotives."

EMD F50CM 268 was rebuilt during 1988 with equipment from Siemens, to test current-source inverters and AC traction motors.

According to EMD, these are the "first all-new locomotives to be built and operated in the United States featuring a three-phase a.c. traction system." The two locomotives were built during June 1989 with 3000 hp 12-710G engines and Siemens AC traction equipment. They differed from the 268 by having voltage-source inverter rather than a current-source system. Also included were desktop controls like those in the AEM7s. EMD owned the 450 while 451 was owned by Amtrak. After a year at the Pueblo test track they made their first run leaving Chicago on September 17, 1990 for Oakland pulling the California Zephyr. The testing on Amtrak went for naught, for on December 26, 1990 Amtrak announced they were purchasing 20 B32-8WH, and 32 AMD-103.

The pair went into storage during 1991 at La Grange until July 1993 when they were repainted and modified to pull the German electric ICE (InterCity Express) trainset on a tour of the United States during August and September. (EMD bought the 451 from Amtrak during 1993) They were later sold to IPT Power Systems, and have been stored at National Railway Equipment in Mount Vernon, Illinois, following some cannibalization by EMD in 1999.

SD60 and SD60MAC Photos
SD60MAC 9500 and 9501 were built by EMD during the summer of 1991. During November the ATSF hauled them from Chicago to the test track near Pueblo. The other two were built by GMD in London. 9502 was completed in June 1992 and 9503 in September, 1992. The first three units started working under lease to Burlington Northern on August 12, 1992 at the head end of a 15,231 ton Denver to Amarillo coal train. This run was cut short when 9501 blew a turbocharger near Trinidad, Colorado. The following tests went so well that BN made the decision to power their Powder River Basin coal trains with a large fleet of AC locomotives. On March 16, 1993 an order of 350 SD70MACs was approved at a cost of $675 million. During the summer of 1993 the SD60MACs tested on several railroads before returning to service under lease on BN. These included C&NW, CP Rail, CSX, Conrail, KCS, NS and SP, and covered 40 States and 8 Canadian Provinces. The 4 locomotives ran on BN, and later BNSF, under lease until June 1998. They were traded back to GM in exchange for 2 SD70MAC locomotives, and electronic upgrades to 4 others. At that time they returned to the AAR test track. These were the only 4 SD60MAC locomotives constructed.

The two SD80MAC demonstrators were built in London, Ontario during July 1995. To start their careers 8000 went to the test track near Pueblo while 8001 went to EMD in LaGrange. Two years later they became Conrail 4128 and 4129, and another two years later they became CSX 812 and NS 7216. Besides the two demos, 28 more SD80MAC locomotives were built, all of which went to Conrail. They produced 5000 HP from a 20 cylinder 710G3B engine.

GM 90 Photo
The two SD90MAC demonstrators were constructed in June 1998. This was after 11 SD90MAC locomotives had already been built for Union Pacific, beginning in October 1996. The 90 and 91 are phase II engines, with changes internally and on the nose not on the earlier UP MACs. These units were powered by the 6000 HP GM16V265H engine. 90 began testing at LaGrange and on CSX, while 91 went to Colorado.

These were the first 4 SD70ACe locomotives, and they were finished during April and May 2003. The SD70ACe is an improved SD70MAC designed to meet the EPA Tier 2 emissions standards which took effect January 1, 2005. The engine under the hood is a 16 cylinder 710G3C-T2. After testing in Colorado, the 72 and 73 began demonstrating on KCS during April 2004. Three of these (71, 72 and 73) were sold to KCS as 3997-3999 during early 2007.

The first modern General Electric AC freight locomotive was the 2000, built during June of 1993, but subject to several modifications during the rest of the year. At first it was painted gray and operated on the GE test track around Erie, PA. After receiving a new paint scheme the 2000 underwent a week of testing during February 1994 on the Buffalo and Pittsburgh. Southern Pacific had the unit during May 1994 working on coal trains on the former D&RGW. During the years 1998 or 1999 the 2000 was renumbered to 4400 when demo 4400 was renumbered 6001.

General Electric's AC6000CW 6000 was completed during December 1995 with the 6000 HP HDL16 engine. March 1996 saw the unit out west on the Union Pacific mainline testing in Wyoming and Utah. It returned to GE during April with some reported vibration problems. Locomotive 6002 was built as Union Pacific 7511 during late 1998. It was returned to GE and replaced by a second UP 7511, while the original became GE 6002 in April 2000.

The 2005 was rebuilt early in 2007 to be GE's first Hybrid locomotive, and renumbered 2010. The debut of GEs one-of-a-kind Evolution Hybrid locomotive was at its Ecomagination event on May 24 at Los Angeles Union Station. This event took place to demonstrate the progress that GE's Transportation business is making in developing a freight hybrid locomotive that is capable of recycling thermal energy as stored power in on-board batteries.

Amtrak F40AC 202 Photo
F40PH 202 was badly damaged during July 1984 while on the Montrealer. It was rebuilt with Brown-Bovari traction motors at Beech Grove shops during February 1988. This also included a 24" longer body and larger wheels. During 1993 the unit was given by Amtrak to the AAR and went to the test track in Pueblo, Colorado.

EMD / ABB FL9AC  Photos
EMD constructed 60 FL9 locomotives for the NYNH&H Railroad between 1956 and 1960. They were somewhat unusual with a B truck under the cab and an A-1-A truck under the rear. During 1991, 1992 and 1993 10 of these locomotives were rebuilt by ASEA-Brown-Boveri and Republic with AC equipment and a 3200 HP 710 engine. They suffered from several problems and have now been scrapped.

GE P32AC-DM  Photos
General Electric called these AMD-110's, a modification of their AMD-103's
(P40DC 800's). They were built to run as diesels (with a 3200 HP 12 cylinder 7FRL12 engine) or electrics (with retractable third rail shoes) so they could operate to the stations in New York City through the tunnels. During 1995 the first 10 were built for Amtrak, followed by 5 for Metro-North. The last of the 49 units was built during 2001.

EMD DE30AC  Photos
The 23 diesel-electric DE30AC's were put together at SuperSteel in Schenectady, New York, by EMD during 1997 and 1998. Power is provided by a 710 engine.
EMD DM30AC  Photos
The dual mode DM30AC is a modification of the DE30AC, constructed during 1999. Diesel power is also provided by a 710 engine, while a third rail shoe is added for electric operation. They were designed to operate through the tunnel into Penn Station.
