Helena depot area is a good place to view from. There is a small park there along with a grade crossing. Go out towards Austin. It is a well graded dirt road with good views of the trains as they climb up towards the tunnel and skyline trestle. I managed in in winter so summer will be no bother. Try also driving towards Horseman. The railway is close to the road in places. Go down towards toston dam for views over the reservoir. Further down takes you to Headwaters state park. You can get good views there also. If you have 4x4 try Lombard for classic views with the old Milwaukee bridge. Enjoy MT.

I rode thru Helena in 1999 on a tour train that operated then between Sandpoint and Livingston.  I believe there is a regularly scheduled MRL freight between Bozeman and Missola, plus extras.  But a big variable is BNSF overhead rights, which may put many of their trains on the line, somewhat depending on how busy BNSF's own mainline is thru nothern Montana.
