Ft.Worth&WesternRR (FWWR) recently installed a turntable in the old historic stockyards tourist area to turn their daily Tarantula steam train locomotive, an 1898
4-6-0. I am not sure which turn table they used. There is another stored lineside on the 8th ave. yard run (ex-Frisco route). Dismantled turntables in the area belonged to Santa Fe, Frisco,& Katy. U.P. (ex T&P) still has an active daily use turntable at Centennial Yard in Ft. Worth on the East side of the engine service/shop building. It is used to reorient locomotives directionwise at their major locomotive service facility. Viewing engine service area ,access is easy and up close . West on Vickery Blvd. west of University Dr. Make first left between car lots and drive through skinny underpass.. Road follows yard entrance to engine facility. It is a public road and there is parking area out of traffic. As a bonus , new yard track construction is underway up close.
The ex-T&P turntable was used to turn the 600's (2-10-4 Texas types) originally, now its length is challenged only by SD-90's. The turntable is not right up front in the engine area, but on the other side somewhat behind the wash building and lines of locomotives. Hope this helps some

North Fond du Lac, WI(Shops Yard) still has both. However, with the CN takeover of WC, neither sees much use except to turn engines and do minor servicing.[V]

I visited a museum in Savanah Georgia a couple of years ago, where there was a round house, and turntable and a few old locos.

hi charlie i don"t have a list , but do know where three of them are. one is at the henry ford museum in detroit .the other is at steamtown . scranton pa. other one is at ansonia oh. just a turntable still being used .and another at dennison oh. i.am not sure of it though.

The EJ&E here in metro Chicago still has a very large roundhouse with operable turntable at their Joliet yards and shops.

There is a ten stall roundhouse, complete with Machine, Car, and Boiler shops, and Stores building located in Victoria, BC. The CPR Victoria Shops (aka=Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway's Russell's Roundhouse). VIA Rail uses the shops to maintain the RDC's used on trains 199 and 198. CP owns the buildings, but rents them out to the company VIA contracts to do the maintenance of the RDC's, the trackage outside the roundhouse and adjacent shops is leased to RailAmerica. While all the E&N's locomotives are based out of Nanaimo now, the shops are still a bee-hive of activity at night, as contracted shop crews clean and service the equipment for VIA Rail.



The Turntable still works, the shop crews turn the RDC's every few weeks to even out wear on the wheels. The last locomotive to be turned on the turntable was E&N GP38 3870 when it made the last revenue run to Victoria in 2001.


The turntable was originally a strong-arm turntable, around the early 1920's a steam engine was put on one end, today the engine is still there, but runs on comressed air.

Vermont Railway (Vermont Rail Systems) has a turntable and a small roundhouse in Burlington, VT.

New England Central has a roundhouse with turntable at St. Albans, VT.

In Spencer, NC there is a museum on former Southern Railway property, including roundhouse and turntable. Admission is free.

An 1856 CB&Q roundhouse exists in Aurora, Il. It was saved from demolition by METRA using a portion for a new station and the actual roundhouse being turned into the Walter Payton's Roundhouse Restaurant.

Can be reached from Chicago using the BNSF West Line. On weekends, $5 gets you an unlimited pass good for both days.

New Haven, Indiana the turntable is still in place and Frankfort, Indiana part of the roundhouse and the turntable is still in place. (The last time I was there, at least) Both yards are Norfolk Southern

BNSF has a rarely-used turntable 1/4 mile east of the newly-restored ATSF/Amtrak passenger depot in Dodge City, KS. The roundhouse which it used to service was torn down maybe late 80's early 90's.

The Union Railroad, a small steel industry rail line in Pittsburgh, still uses their turntable and roundhouse. It is approachable and the entire engine shops are visible from US-22 on the west edge of Monroeville.

The old SOO/WC/CN roundhouse and turntable in Stevens Point, WI is still in daily operation. The old CB&Q/BN/BNSF turntable at Eola Yard is still operable but rarely used these days, but their roundhouse here is long gone (although at any given moment you can see from a few to as many as ten or more units in the area near the turntable and where the roundhouse used to be).

Quebec central uses a turntable and a roudhouse in Vallee Jonction. I think it's the only place where their maintenance is done.

In Janesville WI the Wisconsin and southern railroad still operates a turntable, and an old MIlwaukee road round house. really a neat place, with a ncie hill where you can legally sit and whatch the engiens repaired and switch the yard. Worth visiting if your ever in the area.

Bessmer & Lake Erie/CN Bessemer Division had an operating turntable and roundhouse in Greenville, PA as recently as four years ago, but I haven't been out that way in some time. I assume its still there.

Steamtown in Scranton, Pennsylvania has an operating roundhouse and turntable.
