24 Hours on the Joint NS - BNSF East of KC
Posted by t.winx on Sunday, December 2, 2007 9:49 PM

I got some extra time, so here you guys go.. Please let me know if you find this stuff interesting.

This count started on Friday, August 31st 2007 in the town of Norborne MO. I headed over to WB junction just west of Carrollton around 3 because EB's were backing up for some reason. I spent the night in Norborne. This area, between Norborne and Carrollton is definetely my favorite spot to railfan - so much variety and speed and not too many dull times! MO highway 10 parallels the tracks between the two towns for those who like to pace em.

Technically only 96 but I assume that the 8:27 pig was probably just running a little late so I count it. Anyway, thats 56 BNSF, 26 NS, 13 UP and 2 Amtrak. I predicted reaching 100, but that'll have to wait for next year. I love the extra UP's!

I highly recommend you visit this spot! The curve at WB Junction is incredible! If you want some video from the area you can check out these:

This area sounds exactly like the situation at Daggett CA except there it is only UPRR & BNSF but on the hand there you also get all the BNSF gulf traffic which cuts off the transcon at Texico NM  Smile [:)]

I would like to go to Dagget someday. For a college guy though, it costs a little too much to get there. Smile [:)] Nebraska and KC is about all I can afford. Smile [:)]

There's not too many places where you can see combined mainline NS - BNSF action!! Add the UP trains and amtrak and we're getting pretty rare here!!

Wow awesome! Can you provide more details on how to get to these spots? I will be in KC during the new year weekend and will definitely check this out. Hoping for some snow also! Thanks

BTW the videos are terrific also...subscribing to your vids on YouTube.

Thanks man!

Coming from KC this area is moderately difficult to get to. I like to follow the tracks as much as possible and that would make this tricky, so probably the most simple route consists of MO hwy 210 east to Richmond where you get on to hwy 10. Follow that through Hardin then starting at Norborne the road parallels the tracks. WB junction is about maybe 8 miles on the left. Cant miss it. There is a road that splits the junction and has very little traffic, and there is plenty of gravel area right beside the road to park.

If you want to stay in Norborne I would suggest parking on Oak st. which is much less busier than county D. To get there turn left from 10 onto 2nd st. and take that to oak where you'll turn right. Right past the first crossing pull into the gravel. Nobody should bother you here except the man who lives across the street that has lived there for 50 or so yrs. Interesting man he is. Overall this is probably an hour and a half from downtown KC.

I can't make it back here until next August. Sad [:(] so have fun! and shoot some vids! Let me know how it goes.

Thanks for the directions! I am a Google Earth nerd so I should be able to find everything OK based on what you stated above. Will be in KC four days at the end of the year; if I make it there I will post tons of pics & vids...thanks again!

Weren't you questioned by anyone watching trains at 2:00a.m.?

Not this time, actually. I have been here before, a year earlier, and they questioned me about 9pm. He was nice, and is familiar with railfans so not a problem at all. Funny though, right when he parked his car to talk to me, the gates lowered for the Southwest Chief and the cop's tail end was on the tracks. He had to run back and move it up. Very amusing and odd that he would do such a thing.
