From Raleigh you can easily get to Rocky Mount, which has plenty of CSX action. Rocky Mount is roughly 30-40 minutes from Raliegh. Fastest way is to get on Hwy 64.

Hamlet as before mentioned is great too, 40+ a day last I heard.

The NC Transportation Museum is in Salisbury, plus Linwood yard just up the line. The museum is worth the trip, they have several ACL/Southern Diesels that are still operational. You could make an AWESOME trip out of it by taking the train from Raleigh to Salisbury! I think it is less then $40 for a round trip ticket, check NCDOT's rail page, bytrain.org [^]

Asheville is accessiable and the NS employees are friendly. Action is not to fast, but you can see a variety of motive power and almost any freight, however no intermodal. The roundhouse and turntable are still in place, however, I would use caution if you want to get close. One of the stalls is used for light repairs. So if you want to, come on, however from Raleigh, Asheville is a 5-6+ hour drive, no passenger service yet. [sigh]

So, if your going to come as far as Asheville, you should also stop in Marion (Southern/Clinchfield interchange) and Old Fort (the Loops) along the way. And if you want to come alot farther west, there's the Great Smoky Mtns RR in Dillsboro. [;)]
