Replace Amtrak with Nationwide Maglev Network

I must begin by making it clear that I am an avid HSR supporter. I have ridden Eurostar, TGV Sud-Est, Thalys, and the ICE. I have reaped the benefits of said systems. In the US, I objectively see the solution to America's transportation bottlenecks in replacing Amtrak, route by route with Maglev routes. Phasing out Amtrak (Sorry David Gunn), with route by route Maglev replacements would allow a smooth transition from one to the other. Once the existing Amtrak network (which has been established by the current market) has been replaced, new markets will or will not show themselves. Either way, ground transportation to existing markets will be improved without a loss of service to any of the 500 plus Amtrak communities currently served. <br /> <br /> The higher speeds available to Maglev NOW make it a more practical option for the long distances involved in our beloved country. The longer distances between cities means the lower maintenance costs of Maglev infrastructure will reduce the risk of the Maintenance Of Way bill becomming unmanageable for our descendants. It would be a bumpy road. It will be expensive. Construction costs, however, are inversely related to volume. A Maglev line from Baltimore to Washington would cost far more per mile than a Chicago to Los Angeles line. This is especially true not only because of volume, but because acquiring right of way in such a heavily populated area would cost more than the equipment, and the short distance involved will combine with the safety concerns to prevent the train from ever achieving its highest speeds. Even if the US built a 200 MPH HSR corridor between Chicago and Los Angeles, a 300 MPH Maglev (that's a pessimistic top speed for Transrapid technology) Maglev could shave more than a third off the travel time. Nighttime operations would include express mail and perishables. <br /> <br /> I know this topic will receive its fair share of Naysayers, and I respect that fact. I have not presented my entire case, as it would be too long. Perhaps more will come later. I think this is enough material for us to sort out for now. Have fun, but please don't get personal. Personal attacks do nothing to help either side of the case. :)
