Well...it's a Monday, that's for sure.
I thought I'd stop in from combat (work-) to grab a Gatorade and then get back to swinging my big, heavy hammer. Seems as though today is start crap at work day and I'm now fully on the warpath. I'll be going now...lotta heads need smashing and the hammer and I have lots of swinging to do...

S-ghetti! Yesssss.
Mutt - our FD response time (we are still considered small city) is about 3 min tops in most cases. They do a wonderful job in getting just about anywhere fast.
Someone said there was possibly a wedding or reception in the basement the night before. Wouldn't that just make you feel awful knowing you may have contributed in some way? There is a kitchen down there. That's the 2nd time a wedding reception burned down a building - that I know of - I attended the first one many years ago and the next morning all "evidence" was gone!
Too sad!
Tree - they have a new batallion chief - they broke him in last nite on the rag fire. He sounded like he was reading a recipe going through what all he wanted done and wanted to focus on. I have listened long enough I kept wanting to prompt him. The old chief(s) are pretty relaxed and I kept wanting to tell him to breathe! But he is clear and pretty concise altho a little mixed up on some things. He will be good to listen to when he feels more comfortable.
Back to my garlic bread.......Haaaaaaaaa.......

Since no one has given me any meal requests today, here are your choices for the lunch/dinner and dinner/supper menu:
From the Sunday Dinner leftovers, open-face roast beef sandwiches w/mashed taters and gravy, green beans and cole slaw; and Italian spaghetti/garlic Texas toast or your choice of garlic bread and garden salad.
Desserts today: cherry and strawberry cheesecake, chocolate cake, and apple and peach pies.
I hope everyone approves of today's menu, and also hope everyone enjoys eating whichever you decide to have.

A lot of them do have alarms that are connected to a "monitoring service" and/or to the
local fire department, but as Larry said, given age, construction, etc., within several
minutes, the entire building is gone, there's generally not enough time for any fire
department to respond.
(Larry, correct me on this, but don't the insurance companies and IFPA consider 3-4 minutes getting "on scene" a good response time?)

Those old churches are really hard to save - generally there is the delayed alarm (nobody there), lots of fire load (neatly spaced pews, wide open spaces with plenty of air), and they're old and well seasoned. Haven't seen one saved, yet.
You can bet the deck stainer won't do that again.
Another decent day on the railroad yesterday. More trainman training - this time with the ALCo and the trainmaster driving. Finding out all sorts of little things that aren't in the book, or obvious, but that are important, none-the-less. Still, I haven't hurt anyone or broken anything, both good things. I did get a cab ride out of it! We had plenty of crew, so everybody got a crack at everything. That's really nice for a couple of our conductors who were working as trainmen - they got to "play" a bit without the extra responsibilities of being conductor, too. That was left to the student conductor.....

Gah - what a weekend. I have a little something for just about everyone!
Driver had to work Sat and Sun mornings - so Sat - I was trackside at 5:30 am. But not before I went and inspected a fire going on about 9 blocks from the watch site. 86 year old huge, brick church was totally gutted in a 2 alarm fire. Started in the basement and went right straight up through the roof. I had to go over and find out what it was before I could settle in trackside. Told a coal train to wait for me, I would be right back. He did. I was.
Had a derailment just west of the watch site on Thursday nite - same pesky track we have talked about in the past. Put 4 loaded coal cars on the ground. I used my new bino-culars and found some panel track left over from repairs, some badly bent track, some ties with grooves in them, lots and lots of coal on the ground to be picked up and four empty coal gons sitting upright w/o their axels, which were sitting in a pile next to them.
Unlike Willy, I saw wall-to-wall trains - they were moving freight like mad in all directions. Saw my first 4 tarped cars of nuclear waste, I would assume. They were marked radioactive and heading west through the yard and probably out the other side toward Wyoming.
Also saw one freight train coming almost into the yard, stop and back all the way back out, try to come in on another track, back all the way out and then leave the entire train out on a siding north of town and bring just the engines into the yard. Suppose they were full at the inn?
And the usual moron that slid under the tank car, rather than go a few more feet and use the pedestrian tunnel......
MC - so glad you are enjoying our great state of confusion. Too bad you aren't a little closer or I would give you a birthday maul hug!
Jay - That's why the name of Delavan was so familiar. How sad.
Tree - had a whole weekend of stupid fires along with the big one. Stain your deck, put combustible rags in kitchen - burn down your new house.....
Joe - any skeeter bites?
Willy - nice weekend weather!
Randy - I used to ride on the doghouse......a lifetime ago.
CW - I am exhausted. Too much weekend and not enough hammock time. I am dragging the entire hammock out to the far corner of the garden.....Then I am going to button it shut with me in it.
Good Monday morning, everyone. We've gotten a little bitty shower this morning. Didn't even know it was raining, until I stepped out on the front porch to see if the morning paper had shown up! Heard the rain hitting the awning over the porch, and looked out into the street. Then I noticed a tad bit of moisture on our front sidewalk, leading to the main sidewalk and the street. Interesting. Rain hadn't even been mentioned as a possiblity overnight.
Jay, so sad to hear about that family. Your town will be in our prayers.
Coffee is made fresh, along with oj, oj/tangerine, pineapple and apple juice freshly made this morning. Also have hot water for tea.
On the breakfast bar this morning: fresh cherries, pineapple chunks, cantaloupe & watermelon chunks, turkey bacon, sausage, sausage gravy w/homemade buttermilk biscuits, pancakes (regular and whole wheat), syrup, fresh strawberries and fresh blueberries, scrambled eggs.
Hope everyone enjoyed their weekend, and also hope it was a good, restful weekend, for those who could relax.
Everyone have a good morning, and let me know if you have any meal requests for today.

Good evening everyone. What a beautiful day today! Sarah and I had a Girls Day Out. Enjoyed a late breakfast out, and then went shopping.
I've got the evening round of roast, taters, carrots, etc. on the warmer bar. So come on over, grab a plate and fill 'er up, and head outside to the patio.
Joe and Lance, have containers made up for you two, so you can take it to work tonight.
Everyone have a great evening!!

....The start of a perfect weather day here in central Indiana....That is, if one doesn't care if we don't get any rain....Seems we're not going to for at least 4 or 5 days when it just "might".....
So dry. Humidity is low {for Indiana}, and bright sunshine and temps to get to about 80 today. My yard is nice and smooth as I mowed again yesterday but it is getting it's brown areas....
Larry and Cw thanks for breakfast and supper.we got back late from dayton last night.hey carl we did see a up/sp patched combo taking a powder river train east but a little late to call you.
Good Sunday morning, everyone! Larry, thanks so much for fixing breakfast this morning. Larry, I'm sure you'll have another great day on the railroad.
I'm not going to be around this afternoon, but I have SUNDAY DINNER started in the Crock Pots: roast, taters, carrots, onion. In another Crock Pot, you will find green beans w/diced tomatos Italian. In the fridge are cole slaw, potato salad, garden salad, Caesar salad. And in the cooler, you will find dessert: cherry, chocolate, and strawberry cheesecakes, along with chocolate cake under the cake cover on the counter.
Everyone have a great day, and be careful, whatever your plans are today.
A good Sunday morning to one and all. Sunday Brunch of your choice on the warmer bar - it'll be there all morning for those with Sunday plans.
I'm about to hit the shower and head back down for the railroad. Got there yesterday and was informed that, due to a shortage of crew, I was to sign on as a trainman. Official First Day on the Job - I think I did OK. I did all of the runarounds - the most demanding part of the job. I know the mistakes I made (none critical - mostly procedural stuff) and will be striving to get better.
The railroad also did a railfan run yesterday. I wasn't on it, but did stick around for their return. There are even pictures in some people's collections now of me flagging the crossing (although I'm pretty sure they were shooting the station.
That's a sidelight of the runarounds - the roar of the shutters as the locomotive passes the train almost drowns out the engine....
Have a great day!
That is a good flick. The fiancee and I saw it a while back and we liked it. A bit longish tho...but still worth it. The best part is when LOL just kidding!
Good pizza tonite CW, like always! Thanks for everything you do! Time for bed and then tomorrow it's roto tiller duty again! WOO HOO!
I just got back from the movies. I saw "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End". It was excellent and full of action, so if anyone hasn't seen it yet, I highly recommend seeing it. Also, sit through the credits, because there is one last scene at the very end, after all of the credits have ended.
Time for bed. Tomorrow looks warm, muggy, and possibly stormy by afternoon. A perfect summer day.

Those M/W crews always mess things up for us railfans, don't they?
Have fun at the party.
Good morning everyone.
How about a Supreme topping pizza with salmon meat as part of the topping?
This morning one of the Milwaukee TV stations was doing a remote live coverage of the devastation caused by the storms in Oconto County which is a bit north of the city of Green Bay. Incredably, there were no deaths or life threatening injuries. I wasn't watching too closely, but part of the report was on a small resort. The lodge and out cabins were totaled. The report stated that one couple survived even though the cabin where they were located was lifted and blown completely off the slab foundation. I suspect the remains of the cabin are somewhere on the east side of Oz.
Willy-I'm sure we all can agree that you will become a good safe driver. Just a reminder. When you are thinking about or expressing your gratitude for all the fine things your parents have done for you, don't forget to include that they will also be seeing the cost of their auto insurance just about double.
A story and not a lesson in case you wonder about insurance rates on young drivers. Once a year or so, we have a report of a local teenager in a fatal accident who probably would have survived unharmed wearing the seatbelt. Yesterday, I think I saw the next potential victim. I was on an errand on a rural highway just out of town when I noticed that an approaching car had what first appeared to be a bicycle upright on a trunk rack. When the car got closer, I could see that it was actually a young man standing on the floor of the back seat of the car with his body extending upright through the rear driver side window. He waved as we passed. I had the thought that on my return I might find the rescue squad retrieving his remains from the highway. Not that brain damage would be an issue as, of course, that requires a brain in the first place. Nothing happened this time.
Clear sky and cool temperatures here today. June in Wisconsin can be wonderful. Tomorrow I'm shooting trains in Rochelle.
Since I forgot the fish menu last night, I came back in early, to post tonight's combined menu, so here goes:
anchovie/"t"rainbow trout
cheese/"caboose" cod
pepperoni/"brakeman's" perch
sausage/"conductor's" "just for the" hallibut
supreme/"switchman's" salmon
goetta/"NS/GE" catfish
special/all the above listed PLUS mounds of cheese
(pepperoni, Canadian bacon, onions, peppers, etc. are optional)
Morning all.......
At my parents in Burlington today, getting ready for one final week of training before they let us loose with a trainer for a month or two. One of my classmates hopefully still has a house up in Wisconsin Rapids, he figured that where the tornado went through was about where his house was........
CW, it's okay about last night, found a very good fish fry at a restaurant in Germantown, one of the best fish frys I've had in a long time. Will be in later for the fish fry here, though, this one's just as good......
