Tuesday Produce wasn't much today, just onions and potatoes.  Everybody was saying, "Well, guess I'll go home and fry up some potatoes w/onions."  We only had 35 people today, so didn't take long.  I helped getting produce ready this morning, by putting onions in bags, while two other ladies opened the 10# bags of potatoes, and divided them in half, so everyone could have potatoes.  They only brought us about 20 bags of potatoes.

Then, after Produce, I came back home, and then went and caught a bus to go to the library.  I had about 4 or 5 books that they were holding for me, and I also picked up a book for Walt.

On the warmer bar, you'll find BLTs w/fried taters & onions; in the cooler are garden salads, mixed fruit Jell-o w/whipped cream on top, and there are the usual cakes:  chocolate, yellow, white, and devils food cake.

If there is any light at the end of the tunnel, it's the fact that the UP 844 will be coming at the end of June, so at least I'll be able to see one steamer this summer. Of course the 844 isn't as unique as the QJs, but at least it is something.

Welcome to the club, Willy.  I knew nothing as well, and would've planned a trip to my daughter's place in West Des Moines if I had known about it.

It makes me feel better to know that I wasn't the only one to not know about it. I wonder why it was not publicized better?

Tree - I have an issue I would like to "fix" with our FD - in the very nicest way, of course....

They go out on every "man down, nature unknown" - w/o sending an officer out first to investigate it.  99% of the time, it is "man down, sleeping it off"....And that requires an engine and and a rescue vehicle - police come usually later to help the man off to a bed somewhere.

This has to be very expensive to send out this much equipment each and every time - and we do seem to have a few....I think I would investigate that.  But then, I would hire more police officers than we have - I think we have way too few for what we need.  But that's another story.

Where is the bearclaw....?

Well, I'm in early this morning. My mom and I drove my dad to the airport this morning. He has to go to Boulder, Colorado to do some stuff for the company he works for.

Since nobody else has offered anything for breakfast, I've brought in donuts and juice. Enjoy.

Hmmm quiet in here.  Had a cup of tea....while waiting for the crowd to magically appear.

Tree - our engines go out on each and every medical.  The "ambulances" are scattered among the fire stations, more by geography/population than anything.   So the engine gets there first most of the time.  For a city our size, we have quite a few fire stations.  I checked their response time and it is average 4.5.

I know that some cities call the police to investigate before they call out the fire department.  Our city seems to call the fire department when there is even an inkling of a medical problem. T

It is humid - Houston Ed sez it is really humid down there, so taking his suggestion, I am going to nap quietly under the big tree out back.

Did you all hear QUIETLY.....

Good Tuesday morning, everyone.  Looks like it'll be another beautiful day today.  Hope everyone had a good night, and is well rested this morning.

Coffee is on, juice and tea are ready.  On the breakfast bar:  cantaloupe & watermelon chunks, turkey bacon, sausage, biscuits, gravy, scrambled eggs, and hash browns.

Everyone have a good morning, and I'll see you all after Produce.

S-ghetti!  Yesssss.

Mutt - our FD response time (we are still considered small city) is about 3 min tops in most cases.  They do a wonderful job in getting just about anywhere fast.

Someone said there was possibly a wedding or reception in the basement the night before.  Wouldn't that just make you feel awful knowing you may have contributed in some way?  There is a kitchen down there.  That's the 2nd time a wedding reception burned down a building - that I know of - I attended the first one many years ago and the next morning all "evidence" was gone!

Too sad!

Tree - they have a new batallion chief - they broke him in last nite on the rag fire.  He sounded like he was reading a recipe going through what all he wanted done and wanted to focus on.  I have listened long enough I kept wanting to prompt him.  The old chief(s) are pretty relaxed and I kept wanting to tell him to breathe!  But he is clear and pretty concise altho a little mixed up on some things.  He will be good to listen to when he feels more comfortable.

Back to my garlic bread.......Haaaaaaaaa.......Dinner [dinner]

Mook, I'm not sure exactly how large our "city" is, since they merged the city and county

governments about four years ago, they say(have said) that we are the 16th largest in

the U.S.A. Others have said (and our own) that we are the 26th.

Recently, there has been quite a "Row" with city fathers on either rebuilding, or replacing  existing fire stations so that there is still a good response time.

That "Batallion Chief" sounds like he knows his job!!!

(He will get adjusted to the job.)

Now, I'll get back to the S-gehtti and Garlic Bread.

Well, Dan, and everyone else:  I was planning on having open-face roast beef sandwiches w/mashed taters, gravy, etc., but it seems that that and the spaghetti were all cleaned up at lunch today.  So. . . supper will be:

1.  chicken drumsticks w/corn, green peas and mashed taters and

2.  beef tips portobello w/gravy, mashed taters, and a veggie medley of broccoli, brussels sprouts and carrots

Joe and Lance, I made you two plates for work tonight, with a little bit of both the above choices, so you don't have to decide which you'd like.

Actually, IIRC, 3-4 minutes is pretty good - I'm thinking the standard is more in the 8 minute range.  Not too many cities have a station every "8 minutes."

Ms Mook - That battalion chief sounds like our current student conductor.  Almost too thorough.  I threw him a curve yesterday, though.  The SPAF requires recording the times that all mainline switches are thrown.  Since I don't wear a wrist watch when I work (I carry a pocket watch - part of the 'look') and the pocket watch is under my hi-vis vest, it's really hard to dig out the time when I throw a switch.  So, instead of calling the conductor with the switch position and time, I just report the switch position 'at your time.'  It took him off his regular script (and he all but carries one), but his replies sounded a lot more relaxed.  Threw him for a loop when I reported the switch "lined and locked normal."  Might as well have fun.
