A couple of letters to the editor of the Berkeley Daily Planet today defended train whistles:

http://www.berkeleydailyplanet.com/article.cfm?issue=06-21-05&storyID=21661

I wonder if the people who complain about train whistles are the same idiots who teach their car horns to honk when they approach or walk away. Sometimes they make me jump six feet when they disturb the steam locomotive recording I'm listening to on my walkman. Doesn't the law prohibit sounding of an auto horn when it serves no traffic purpose?
