A lot of places are "single stream."  It all goes together and they sort it out later.

Years ago I was working in a computer center, where we carefully prepared "used" computer paper for recycling.  A lot of it had carbon paper interleaved in it, and we even went to the trouble of removing that (we had a machine for that).

One day the garbage truck showed up and dumped that recycle into the bin on the back of the truck - right on top of the cabbage the grocery store had pitched...

Here in Marion, IA, the city has mostly two-compartment garbage trucks, one for recycle and one for trash.  Last week the pickup was delayed a day due to the holiday, which put us on Saturday.  I watched as they came around with just a one-compartment truck and dumped both containers into it. Huh?

Still haven't been advised what is to be put in the jumbo containers; one has a yellow lid the other has a black lid.  Feel certain they are for different aspects of refuse disposal, but I have no idea what each color is for.

Usually yellow is recycling.  Probably all end up being thrown out anyhow, so why even bother with an extra container/truck/crew?

Bought the place in 1990.  At that time the town was having two trash pick ups a week.  Later on, I don't remember when, they decided on one trash pick up and one recycling pick up each week.  The same truck and same crew make the pick ups.  I have no idea how the recycling is actually handled.  My Florida condo had a special recycling container for a few years, but then eliminated it.  Waste Management was doing the pick ups in Florida, the town is doing the pick up in Maryland.

It's been fun.  But it isn't much fun anymore.   Signing off for now.

My town is now going to the 'jumbo sized' trash/recycling containers that are designed to be picked up and dumped by mechanization on the garbage truck.

For years we have had track pick up on Tuesday's and recycling pick up on Thursday's with recycling spit between paper and glass/plastic/metals in separate containers.  Trash was previously limited to 36 gallon containers, maximum.

Yesterday was recycling day and I set out my regular recycling containers - they took the recycling, containers and all.  Those containers fit within the confine of my house.  The jumbo containers don't.  Called the town and requested my containers be returned, in number they were, in kind they weren't.

Still haven't been advised what is to be put in the jumbo containers; one has a yellow lid the other has a black lid.  Feel certain they are for different aspects of refuse disposal, but I have no idea what each color is for.

I abruptly had to close out the ham radio net I was running this morning to respond to a pick-up vs tree.  Fortunately, it wasn't a direct hit, because although the tree lost a little bark, its 3-4 foot girth clearly won the battle.  The driver went to the hospital.

We've been pretty busy.  I made a trip to the trash transfer site this afternoon and responded to a bee sting from there.

It's been a rough week for motorcycles, too.  My department has yet to respond to one, but a neighboring department has had two - both riders were flown out to the trauma center.

Amazing how trees tend to win those battles.

I'm pretty sure we collected enough money to cover our costs, but not by any wide margin.

That helps and with good weather, fellowship, and food you had a good time. Beats pulling bodies out of wrecks. Thanks for what you and all the other volunteer firefighters do.

If you cooked 100 servings, what did you do with the leftovers?

The FD workers got dinner, a number of attendees bought halves or additional complete dinners, and we gave the workers some of the side dishes if they wanted them.  The last few chicken halves are in the freezer.  They are delicious reheated.

I'm pretty sure we collected enough money to cover our costs, but not by any wide margin.

Today we (FD) catered (barbequed chicken) a class reunion.  We'll try not to do any more of those.  The estimated attendance was 100.  Fifty-seven showed up.  We didn't hold them to the 100 meals, but we should have.  It was a lot of work for what we got out of it.

Still hoping to get to Deshler this year.  The white coats aren't cooperating.

Saw the KCS unit holding on the SW wye.

Yesterday was the 30th anniversary celebration on the Adirondack Railroad.  I couldn't work in train service, so I spent time with the drone in the air, captureing various activities.

Evening

Ns came back in our building again today.Looked like they had a train stopped after work too.Went to Deshler to trim around the park and museum.Along with usual csx stuff the dispatcher asked the local to be facing southward when they went back to Lima.So they took the train north, backed down the Nw wye, then took the SW wye and used the north crossover to get back on the main and go south.Meanwhile B 522 was waiting to go into the sw siding. The cpls were showing all the aspects today.Met a grandfather and grandson and showed them around. Can't wait to go back for tomorrow.College boy is spending the night there as well.

Delivered some raffle tickets I'd printed to a fire department in another part of the county, and stayed for their parade.  A sign of the times - not a single band.

On my way home I spotted a rail inspection vehicle in a farmyard.  Couldn't miss it - yellow and white and big letters on the side - "rail inspection vehicle."  Didn't stop.  Must be relatively new (at that location, not the equipment).  I don't go that way often, but it's the first time I've seen it.  There are no tracks there, and never were.  It's several miles off the nearest tracks.

More warnings about Li Ion batteries.

Haven't had any problems with my various hand-held radios.  Those are the biggest rechargeables I have.

Advise on EV fires is to bring lots of water.  As I've mentioned before, a GM rep stated after a fire at GM's Proving Grounds, that these will be "protect the exposure" events.  We've had several fires in this area from scooters.

I saw someplace that scooter fires are a daily event in NYC...

More warnings about Li Ion batteries.  This time charging.  This poster is moving my items that are being charged to a concrete block enclosure.  Main idea is do not charge if battery has just been used .  Also wait until battery has completely cooled before charging and then after charging cooled.

Have not decided on my computers and cell phones except do not charge phones for least hour after using.
