...

My older son got quite a thrill a couple of days ago when walking back to his apartment from JHU. Lightning close enough that the flash temporarily hurt his eyes.

T'storm 2 nights ago - a stroke of lightning hit and you could feel its pressure wave while the flash was still imaged on my retinas.  Damn near *** a brick!

Worked as engineer today. Number of today's bulletin order was 6-66. The devil's bulletin order. Sure enough, encountered a downed tree on the ROW in a curve about 8 miles in. Couldn't stop for it, but no damage done - mostly just the top of the tree. Just a few more scrape marks on the cars. I'm sure they'll buff out.

How far did the 'walking rocks' of Death Valley move?

Good question. My recollection is that the 'walking rocks' need a combination of wet ground and high winds for the rocks to move around.

Flash floods in Death Valley, CA cause road closers.

I checked the weather forcast for Death Valley yesterday and all that moisture pushed the dew point to 75F. Not exactly "dry heat".

There some spectacular cumulonimbus clouds over the mountains in SoCal yesterday afternoon, with classic anvil tops.

T'storm hit at dinner time - 1.86 inches of rain in less than an hour.  Not as much lightning as last night.

Any extra cats and dogs running around the neighborhood afterwards?

I have a 'Lightning Detector'.  It maxed its count to 99 within about 5 minutes from the first rumble of thunder.

Thunderstorm currently in progress!  Supposed to bring in cooler, drier weather.

It's the cold front that brings the weather (or pushes it ahead of itself).

My 'weather station' showed 103 degrees briefly with a 'feels like' of 113.

It got just above +80F here today, and the heat index didn't quite make +90F, but it's so humid that everything is damp...

Saw a SB taconite(?) unit train at Neenah on CN this aft. Had BLE ore Jenny cars. They weren't tagged. Would this traffic go by ore boat normally?  Or maybe to Granite City?  It met with a NB unit oil train. Two commodities that built the country.

Today was supposed to be the hottest day of the week here, with highs approaching 100.  That certainly didn't pan out- we had severe storms mid-morning, and the sky finally cleared within the last hour.  Temp is only 81.

Returned the grand-dog to her home Monday.  As we entered the development where my daughter and  her family live, she (the pup) perked up - she knew where she was, although we were still a half mile from the house.

The other half of the the day's trip was attending the committal of a friend's mother.  This veteran of the Army nursing corps lived to be 100.  In addition to the Ukranian church service, she received military honors.

Ended the day closing a road for a neighboring fire department as the result of a two vehicle head-on collision.  Two patients were flown to a trauma center, another went by ground to a local hospital.  One required extensive extrication.  It must have been very serious, as the state police did a rather extensive investigation.

Ns had a train split the 127 crossing at Latty yesterday. We heard a couple eastbounds on csx during our morning walk today.Had a good time with great niece and nephew and their friends. After the sun went down the bugs came out in force.College boy is going to grill our lunch before he heads back.As far as longer trains can't wait until it gets below zero and something happens.

Why stop at 17-18K foot trains - lets go for 20K. [/sarcasm]  Maybe they can even have Foote walk one for a Defect Detector Malfunction on a 33 degree night in a driving rain.

Add in several 10 degree curves with super elevation.  A prescription for injuries.
