No train related news here, but I got some visible benefit from my HOA fee.

Late last Thursday a large water pipe on property sprung a leak. Most of the precious water went into the drain but the rest was a concern; adjacent buildings are on a slope and our ginormous oak tree was now in a small lake.

Maintenance was able to get a crew which arrived at midnight armed with lights, jackhammer (!) and other tools. They worked through the night and got water restored about 9am.

blue streak 1

CSX has parked since this Friday morning on our town's siding a mile long Haz Mat train.  All plackards 1987 led by 3 CN locos forward, tail,  forward.  Front about 2000 feet from home.

Guide missing.  1987  alcohol?

Above train left about 1800.

Today about 1900 same train came back south and was again parked in siding. Two CN units same but had CSX as second loco.  Train was same with cement car still on north end.

Battery died on my 2017 Ram.  Only 5 years.  Got 6 years out of the original battery on my 2003 Durango - the replacement for the Durango battery only lasted 3 years - to the day.

There is a steel foundry in Neenah I believe. At least thats the town I see on the man hole covers.

Thx, Joe.
I'm across the street from Neenah Foundry several days a week. Have friend I take to work at a firm that reconditions paper machine rolls. He doesn't have transportation right now. NF is laying off 115 now. Have sold off one of their product lines that's no longer profitable for them. Still do a lot of municipal and construction products. They take gons of scrap metal occasionally, but lots of coal by semi from Milwaukee. Finished products all go out by semi. The foundry is located along the CN at the south end of Neenah's yard.

Remember that a railcar (or a truck) remains placarded whether empty or full, unless it's been cleaned.

It's guide 127 in the ERG (orange book), which is available on-line, including as an app you can download to your phone.

Sad pile of ruble - what is the 2 axle CSX trailer on the far side of the NW leg of the wye?  I am surprised that the tower is still standing.

The trailer is probably supplies for the demo crew - oil, grease, parts, etc.

When CSX rehabbed the tower I was wishing they would put in windows that recreated the look of the tower "back in the day."  No such luck.

It's a mixed blessing.  It's sad to lose an historic building, but apparently it was as much of a wreck inside as it was an eyesore outside, and the cost (never mind the cost/benefit ratio) to bring it back into useful shape was more than anyone would have wanted to spend.

There's been talk of building a restroom / storm shelter at the park.  I always thought it would be cool to use brick from the station as a veneer for such a facility.

...

As Joe noted, the depot at Deshler is gone - at this moment a rapidly diminishing pile of rubble.  Hopefully they won't simply fill the space with storage containers or the like.

I was in town when what had been warned as a severe thunderbumper came through.  Not much left in it by then, and when I got home (a dozen miles away) all was still dry...

Was just at Neenah on CN.  Three SB's three blocks in a row, one on single track, and one NB stopped.  Makes me wonder if there's a derailment south of Neenah.

Another 2 thunder bumpers today.  WEre not so close.   Closest thunders were actually 3 - 4 seconds delay.  Already lost a tree 3 years ago.  Do not need to loose another.  For last year lots of fair amounts rain.  Just enough rain breaks to mow 6 -8 days apart. Do not fertilize but sure looks like a golf course after mowing.

My closest hit was a house 30' from ours. I was in bed. The thunder clap made me feel like it was IN MY ROOM! Had an urge to get under the bed. So loud my ears hurt. Glad it wasn't my house. Can't forget

You know when it is close when it is bang - flash instead of the other way.  Believe it or not (ripley) have had 3 in the last week including one at 1604.  dogs are getting too used to it and they only growled today.  ATT is starting to question all my zap calls.  Last 2 years my count has been about 8.  They promise to bury my drop line now.

Just shipped back latest fried router.  that was just one of almost everyone on our block.

My older son got quite a thrill a couple of days ago when walking back to his apartment from JHU. Lightning close enough that the flash temporarily hurt his eyes.

T'storm 2 nights ago - a stroke of lightning hit and you could feel its pressure wave while the flash was still imaged on my retinas.  Damn near *** a brick!

I fortunately was never that close to a lightning strike, and don't have desire to do so. Closest experience was a storm almost thirty years ago, strokes were close enough that I could see the near ultraviolet and thunder started with a very pronounced crack. I saw a very bright flash, but instead of thunder I heard a very load buzz coming from a dropped power line next door. The surge was strong enough to trip the breaker on the transformer.

N.B. Most lightning discharges are triggered by "dart leaders" from the cloud, with most of the energy in the "return stroke" that starts from the ground and follows the ionized path created by the dart leaders back up to the cloud.
