U-Boots on the Saskatchewan River reminded me of something.

We could probably use this guy too!

Ah, I remember "Kix" all right

Looking at the facial expressions on the people in the ad, it's difficult to remember that wasn't originally a sugar-coated cereal...

and I can't resist ... since we have Kix and atomic bombs (and, now that you mention it, BaltACD) ...

Bill Miner and so many others attacked trains, but have you ever seen a train attack back?

"The Saskatchewan Pirate!"  Loved it!

Ah, I remember "Kix" all right.  Everyone remember you weren't supposed to pour the milk in the bowl TOO fast?  If you did, they'd all jump out!

Well yes, this would be the place to continue the discussion. It was pretty good as it was going.

Or the Shredded Wheat thing ..

I think the RSN already had their hands fully hunting down the Last Saskatchewan Pirate!

Why not bring the strategic thermonuclear discussion over here?

But now he's dead (dead)

But not enough not to be dead (dead)...

The thought of RSN Torpedo wakes kerfing across a field of Rapeola/Canola is mirthful!!

I love IT!!

Thousands of Nazi sympathizers and U -Boats in the South Saskatchewan River.

It is certain the RSN ( Royal Saskatchewan Navy ) would have dispatched the U -Boats with ease as where could they go in a land locked province. The Nazi sympathizers were a dead giveaway and were dispatched by Captain Canada in a matter of days if not hours .

Find something interesting looking at photos.  All our instructions on securing the electras were to place the #4 prop blade in the straight down position.  That was other than short turn arounds.  Cannot remember the reason but maybe that is no longer a requirement?

Not so much the #4 blade down as the #2 blade up, to refresh your memory.  The vent for the ring in the governor 'actuator' in the prop hub is adjacent to #2 blade, and if it starts leaking over time, or due to deferred maintenance, there might be 'issues'.  It makes sense to plan for even the remote possibility by walking the prop around until the vent is 'up'.

Note that even a small rotation in starting pressurizes all four pumps and starts throwing the fluid toward the outside diameter to where it will not vent, so there is little issue other than on relatively long standing...

I find it amusing that none of the online engine manuals for the Electra even mention this procedure -- I guess new aircraft weren't ever expected to leak without prompt repair ... sorta like the brakes on a Routemaster bus Surprise

As the Title on the book says; " Oh! The Coal Branch."

A photo from that book.  This is near mile 13 on CN's Mountain Park Subdivision, about here:  53.097892, -117.144280

Like all mountain streams, the McLeod River has changed course many times over the years, and no longer flows right next to the track there.

Down for good?  It depends.

If it's worth Air Spray's while to repair the Electra, it'll fly again.  It all depends on the amount of damage sustained and parts availability and, of course, the cost.  From the photo it doesn't look all that bad, but you never know.

Have flown electra.  It is a good stable workhorse.  Never had landing gear problem.  On problem is the engine out characteristics are quite different.  The engines  ( Once allison 501-D13s ) are reliable.  However the  props need constant watching because if a prop angle piston in the props( 1 each for each prop ) starts leaking fluid the  fluid goes to outside of prop causing an unbalance with immediate engine shutdown. Did happen in some Convair 580s

The prop wash of the props provide quite a bit of lift over the wings especially on take off and landing so a failure requires quite a bit of airmanship flying aircraft much faster on landing than normal.

Rebuilt to "B" units?  Interesting, I've never heard of that before.  Thanks!

MKT also rebuilt an F7A into a booster that had a similar appearance.

It was still an active unit, but now used as a B-unit.  This was done late in the second life to a handful of the rebuilt F7AUs to avoid the cost of maintaining the cab equipment.  Fans in the area sometimes nicknamed them "blind beetles".

Interesting stuff NDG!

The heater car in the first photo reminds me of the heater cars the Ontario & Western built from old steam locomotive tenders.  O&W had three.

That third photo of the F unit with painted over cab windows, I'm assuming it's a "stuffed and mounted" display piece?

FYI.

These images shows just how much things have changed!

S/G Car for heat as Freight F Unit. Nee CN 9106.

Boston Bar 1965.

To this. CN  9101

Person needs a Rubik's Cube to solve CN's Diesel Roster?

One thing that stays the same is the Scenery as the wallpaper to the images illustrates

Lovely to see.

Down from Nordegg to the East, and the Coal Branch and The Fording on CP, and many other locations.

Not so much fun on Grades, Descending, Snow, Wind and Descending Temperatures.

As the Title on the book says; " Oh! The Coal Branch."

Another Story.

About ten 10 years ago the Company purchased a fleet of USED Rotary Drawbar Bathtub Coal Cars to be used as Gondolas, many winding up in Company Service for scrap tie loading.

Of course these cars were spotted in a yard which handled Revenue Cars of the same design still in used for Coal loading.

The wrong set was lifted, sent to a mine, and the scrap ties topped off with coal.

The fun began at the Dumper where the ties fell out along with the Coal, jamming up the plant for quite some time.

Cars soon stenciled ' NOT FOR COAL LOADING ' in three foot letters.

At the Dumper.

Thank You.

Leasers can also add to the confusion.  BNSF has some long-term leased GP38's working locals and switching out of Hodgkins just to add some variety.
