I have been to retreats at a monastary and yet know very little about the lives of the monks themselves. I know about Thomas Merton but then again he was very outspoken. I know St. Bonoventure in Olean NY had a shortline railway and so did Notre Dame in South Bend.(Brothers of Holy Cross). Can U tell us how to vistit and come closer to God via Trains and help out with the layout? I would love to do 3d printing of buildings

Honest question. I knew a couple of men of the cloth who were railfans. I think the most notible is Rev Wilbert Awdry who wrote Thomas the Tank Engine series of books.
Fr. Edward Dunn was a Jesuit Preist in Buffalo who wrote Buffalo Railroads and a seris of books on local railroad history
Think it's a pretty straightforward question and doesn't strike me as offensive. It could have been worded a bit better but far be it from me to correct or critisize someone's grammar. I'd hate to scare future posters away because they're afraid to run afoul of some non-existant "grammar police."
The only person likely to be offended would be Brother Lion, and we haven't heard from him yet.

A musical answer might refer to "This Train is Bound For Glory" or "That Hell-bound Train". The railroad hobbies could theoretically take you either direction, or they might be neutral forces. Hobbies, in general, are good, healthy pursuits. A very good railfan friend of mine became a monk, and remained a railfan until he died. In High School, I was taught by Bro. Fergus Burns, C.S.C., who made no apologies for being a railfan.
I'd be curious to hear Bro. Lion's response, although his feelings may be personal. He just might feel uncomfortable responding, and if so I would certainly honor his privacy.

The lion is not a monastery, he lives in one. How did you get to be a house?

I'm no more surprised that a monk or clergyman should take an interest in trains than that a dentist should. Neither God nor teeth need take up all of one's time.
This reminds me of the fuss about 20 years ago when it was disclosed that a particular insurance outfit -- I'd name it if I could remember it --charged clergy more for their auto insurance. Reason: Presumably they were driving around with their head in the clouds, thinking more of spiritual matters than of the road and traffic.
Needless to say, that BS was promptly laughed out of existence -- but it needed the light of day, first.
Well, I think I kind of like Trackrats posts. Some anyways. He's looking at things from a different perspective and brings some variety to the standard topics. Bars near subway stations? Why not? I'm sure some of us have imbied a few times.
Sure he can be offensive, especially if one disagrees with him, but again some of it fun to read and opens one up to "what if?"
This thread, while poorly worded, doesn't seem the least bit offensive. Seems the simple question is how does a man of cloth become/stay a railfan? Or more generally whats it like to be a monk?
I don't suppose he would get such backlash if he asked "why aren't there more women in the hobby?"
I'd love to hear the Lions response but if he chooses not to I'd understand. Perhaps there's another member with similar background who would care to respond?
Speaking of Lion, seems to me there were some fourm members who were peeved by his speaking/typing in the third person. Seems we have some members who like to complain when another member doesn't think/act just like them.

ruderunner, you know better than that. You don't need to be offensive to offer a different perspective. By the way, the initial post to this thread is less offensive than it is a matter of trolling. Trolling is supposed to be prohibited on these forums.
trackrat is a troller and his comments on religion coud be pretty offensive to members of some faiths. This was supposed to be about everything to do with trains, not a religious forum. As to the Moderators, judging by some of the stuff on here recently, it looks like whatever they are doing is pretty invisible.
My take:
Had the OP simply asked how Lion became a railfan it would have been a legitimate question. However, asking how his religion factors into it is purely an invasion of his privacy. IOW, it is none of our business.

Schlimm, I have the impression, from his attempts at sentence structure and his religious knowledge, that the OP is perhaps adolescent, and not an adult. As to spelling, one of our respected posters, especially concerning Classic Trains, is older than I, is not always consistent in his spelling, and yet exhibits great knowledge of railroading.

Just my opinion: The Opening Posted question on this Thread would have been more appropriately sent via the Private message option, rather than in an Open Thread Posting.
That kind of conversation could be very enlightening; if it were truly asked by an interested party, Bro. Lion could respond, if he felt the question and its response were approprite, as asked.
That type of conversation has no place in an open public forum.
Bro. Lion deserves the respect for his knowledge, and his sharing that with us here. Personally, I have thoroughly enjoyed the presentation of his choice of photo formats of the NYC Transit System. And the respect of his choice of worship, as well.
I have personal evidence to back up that trackrat888 is an adult, once used the handle ohiorivertrails, and speaks just about the same as he writes.
As for if this thread's offensive, I too would leave it up to broadwaylion to decide. There's absolutely no requirement that he reply, and I don't believe his lack of reply says one thing or another about his opinion if the thread's offensive.

Read paragraph 4 of the forum terms of use.
Norm, are you addressing me? How does that paragraph apply to whether or not the thread's offensive or if Broadway Lion has to reply to the thread, or if his lack of reply says one thing or another about his opinion if the thread's offensive?

So, you are saying that God is a foamer? Tell me please which railroad does God prefer, See US Hexx, Nutsy Southern, or Usurper Pacific?
Broadway Lyon is a monastery? Buildings are not joining the forum now, are they?
(Monastery is spelled correctly in this post, unlike in the original post, unless that spelling in the original post was some kind of trick.)

of course God's a foamer. Although some translations say "the train of his robe"
Isaiah 6:1
King James Bible
In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.
gardendanceof course God's a foamer.
Yes, but don't you see? Those of frail conviction might take offense with the knowledge that God prefers a railroad different from their favorite. because then that might mean they have been wrong in the selection of their own favorite.
God loves all his railroads equally. It's slightly different with religious orders.
A Franciscan and a Dominican were discussing which of their orders was God's favorite. They decided the only way to settle it was to write him a letter.
"Dear God, which of our orders do you like better, Franciscans or Dominicans? Yours Sincerely, the Franciscan and the Dominican".
They got a reply:
"My dearly beloved children, I like each of your orders equally well, Your in Christ, God SJ".
For you heathens who don't know what SJ means, it's the abbreviation for Society of Jesus, or the Jesuits, which all good Catholics know is God's favorite priestly order.
This lapsed Catholic just split a gut after that last post!

Surely not the Madeira-Mamoré Railroad?
Ah Yes "Manefest Destiny" with the T&P. Now really back in the 1950s Billy Graham had the ears of millions of Americans along with Bishop Fulton Sheen on Radio and the new TVs. Railroads as well as other industries in colusion with there unions were cleaning house of communists, socialist and anyone on the left who was working who was part of the IWW International Workers of the World. The Merger of the AFL with the CIO cleaned house as part of the deal. The Church which in practice had communism for those living in its own orders supported the Macarthy and J Edgar Hoover red scares which BTW both men were devout Catholics and had the blessings of the church.(As for me anyone who gives away free wine on sunday is fine by me). Living in a Monastary or a order has a appeal for me because I could devote more time to study and to a higher power.

Schlimm,
Allow me to retort! With 5,800 posts who allows you to pass judgment on trackrat888 and the rest of us? And cast aspersions on other people and their motives for writing followed by your hip shot psychological assessment! Grow up from your vindictive character assassination.
You could at least reply to what you don't like with a counter or opposite opinion if you have one.

I'm going to have to side with schlimm on this. Trackrat 888 has been known to post political, religious, and other topics prohibited by forum terms of service under several aliases. Aliases have included Polish Falcon and Ohio River Trail. You can find some of his past work if you're willing to search for it.
