At the end of the piece, there's a box with the words "Learn More".

Sorta wish they would.

Tom

There is also a 'contact us' button at the bottome of the page.  I did and told them what they had just published in their map was GARBAGE!.

Balt, have you heard from them yet? Or are they marshalling their evidence that they speak the truth? Surely they will put forth their overwhelming evidence that everything they have in their broadside is the gospel truth.

Crickets so far!

Yes, this is the season for crickets to be making their noise; I heard them quite often this month (I have not heard any this week; perhaps 8000 feet elevation is not their habitat). I will probably hear them again this Saturday, after I go back down to 5280+ feet.

I doubt I will hear from them after having asked them if their supporters work for free--I mentioned Mr. Rockefeller's contribution to home safety.

These people are activists.  Their main goal is to influence the media (they're very good at that) and public opinion.  They throw out accusations and see which ones stick.

As to Rockefeller,  He made the average person's life better.  He made kerosene affordable for the average person.  For the first time at night decent artificial lighting was available.  Before that, it was candles (or maybe some whale oil.  Good Heavens, they killed the whales! )

He did a lot of good with his money.  For one example, he improved medical education in the US by offering what then passed for medical schools funding if they met improved standard.

"By many measures, the U.S. freight rail system is the safest, most efficient and cost effective in the world." - Federal Railroad Administration, October, 2009. I'm just your average, everyday, uncivilized howling "anti-government" critic of mass government expenditures for "High Speed Rail" in the US. And I'm gosh darn proud of that.

How about they make a map of "blast zones" from an airplane crash.  That would be everywhere.  Now added any roads since a driver could lose control and go off the road.  Add military bases that have weapons.  Add gas stations, pipelines, and refineries.  And what about an asteroid? Oh my the whole nation is coveredSurprise, no where is safeMischief. We need to live in under ground bunkers.Whistling

Everywhere and everything is dangerous, and you will die one day.  Live your life with reasonable risks and have fun.

I spent part of my military career keeping track of the hazard zones around aircraft loaded with iron bombs.  If I had ever tried to play as fast and loose with 'facts' as these weenies have I would have been court-martialed.

The way their stupid map is drawn and labeled gives the impression that there are loaded tank cars parked nose to tail along about thirty thousand miles of track, just waiting for an excuse to become a disaster.  Also, about 3/4 of the way through I caught their reference to, "Unsafe tanker cars."  At that point, my suspension of disbelief, tenuous to begin with, tripped off line.  If you don't know the vocabulary, how are you supposed to carry on an intelligent conversation?

As far as I can determine, these are typical critics - good at pointing out (and exaggerating) percieved faults, but mighty short of ways to solve problems.  (Only a lawyer would think that passing a law has ever solved a problem!)

A science fiction look at Roseann's comment was/is ODTAA - One D****d Thing After Another.

What a load of BS!

If precipitation is occurring, do they also run around yelling, "The sky is falling"?

I live with the UP's 50mph Milwaukee sub just 1/2 mile to my west, the UP's 60mph Kenosha sub about 2 miles to my east, and CP's 60mph C&M sub about 1 mile west. Ever since I moved here, I've always stayed cognizant regarding wind direction and speed, 'just in case', because I'm much more concerned about the inhalation hazards that pass by every day.  And those concerns pale compared to the risk I feel I take every time I get behind the wheel of my car, what with all the fools on their cell phones yaking and texting.

Somebody please refresh my memory.  Wasn't Radon responsible for the extinction of Hobbits?  I think I read that somewhere.

It would be funny if someone where to send the creators of this map a email with a link to this discussion.  Would be interesting to see what they would think?  Maybe they would post something that attempts to say we're all idiots who got it all wrong.  Then we would have fun proving that they got it backwardsMischiefSmile, Wink & Grin

I guess that explains why I haven't seen any hobbits for a while.

I definitely live in a BLAST ZONE - there is a LPG bulk transfer station less than 1/4 mile from the house.

There is also a 'contact us' button at the bottom of the page.  I did

I briefly thought about doing that but then I had a dread fear that if I did my return e-mail address would be circulated around to every environmental activist website on the planet. I was afraid I wouldn't live long enough to get my address removed from all of them.

Note to Mike F90 and the "Its a Twister" video, it was nice to see Robert Stack at the end. Nobody today can convey that "large and in charge" vibe like he can.

You don't have a e-mail address you use for 'spam generating' sites?

[snipped - PDN] This map . . . is in the spirit of those progressive area maps that showed land grants to be many times larger than they really were. . . .

"+1" - my thought exactly.

Wonder what their source data is, and how they obtained it ?

I almost hate to tell ya.  I've been waiting to see if anyone else was actually going to read far enough to find out... but after four pages, it doesn't seem anyone has.

Kyle

Better not do that.  They don't really need to actually post anything of their own to give that impression, just do some quoting from some of the posts that have been made so far... Surprise

If you press that 'Learn More' button and read down the page that appears:

The Blast Zone map uses data from Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s publicly available rail map data set2. There are many more possible rail lines than we show on the map—these rail routes were chosen based on the article “All Oiled Up,” available in the March 2014 issue of Trains Magazine and authored by Fred Frailey 3. The article shows the most likely rail routes used for oil by rail.

I'm a bit surprised Fred himself hasn't commented somewhere on this.
