Did Trains Magazine have anyone there? It would be neat to see an in-depth article on the diamonds replacement process, with photos and explanation of what they accomplished at each stage. Will the pit full of ballast solve the 'rock-'n'-roll' problems? /Mr Lynn

UP dispatcher setting up 2 westbounds on #2, then one eastbound out of global 3. The BNSF tamper if fouling the diamonds; I assume they have the key release to protect it; can't see if the UP signal is red in the early am sun

BNSF surf gang going to clear up at 8:00; will not get to #2 track until 3:00pm. Don't know if this means that #2 track will be out of service until that work is completed.

UP trains are stacking up on both sides of the diamond, waiting for the green flag. Nothing on the scanner from BNSF

I have been timing the train's speeds... I get just under 15 MPH.  (2.504 seconds for a 53-ft container to pass a given point = 14.4 MPH)

The BNSF Rochelle local is back to work. After doing their yard work will be the first movement over the 199 switch since the track panel was installed late last week. It was ballasted but not surfaced.

Did not catch the exact reason, but they abandoned the attempt to enter the track. It involved some discussion with BNSF track person on site.

First BNSF to hit the new diamonds at 9:45 (Not counting the aborted attempt by the local, which would not have crossed any diamonds)

UP and BNSF also replaced the diamonds at Fremont NE on yesterday.  The track there was scheduled for opening about 3am this morning.

I do not recall seeing the tamper go down the siding after they dumped ballast on Sunday. Not sure if that was the reason for the abort by the local.

It didn't. When the crew briefed with track forces after going on duty they seemed to indicate it would be ok to proceed with the understanding that the track had not been surfaced. What changed when they reached the switch I did not catch. All I heard, apparently from one of the track guys, was that he would have to make a phone call. The crew then indicated they would not proceed past the switch and reversed back to the yard.

Looks like the maintainers are looking at the siding as well. Quite a breeze blowing.

Now an eastbound BNSF has been given a speed restriction of 10 mph on #2 track, which will be the first movement on #2 actually over the diamonds

Looks to me like a fairly good sized pile of ballast ON the spur.  I don't believe I'd want to run my train down there if I were the engineer or conductor.
