AgentKid Well, this is disappointing. I put the camera on while I was waiting for my Sunday paper and the there is not a darn thing going on with the exception of one BNSF and two UP WB's in the last 25 minutes or so. The way things were jumping yesterday afternoon I really thought something was going to happen Bruce

On the scanner Friday I heard someone half jokingly suggest that people would be taking off on Monday
Just now, as an EB UP train came in, two girls in the park pumped their arms--and the engineer gave them a short blast/
I was reminded of the time that one night I was pacing a GM&O train, dippped my headlights--and the engineer gave me two shorts.

jeffhergertWorse than that, my Sunday paper didn't have the comics section.
Of course, some of those comics would today be less than politically correct, or else today's readers wouldn't be able to understand their premise.
I do agree, however, that the comics are oftimes the best part of the paper. There are days when I spend more time reading the comics than I do the rest of the paper...

Larry,
Back then the [Sunday especially] papers were thick and actually contained news and people actually read them. Sears, J.L. Hudson and the like actually bought full page ads. A far cry from today.

Dwight911I've been noticing a new time-out behavior the last few days. At times the audio goes away while the video continues. I won't notice until a train comes through and makes no noise. Thanks to Trains for this wonderful webcam!
I just experienced the opposite. Heard the sound of a train approaching and then starting over the diamonds - the video showed nothing. Refreshed the screen and saw a EB coal train on the UP.
Never too old to have a happy childhood!
Well, looks like we're not getting the big change out today, but at least we're getting the WP-Mopac pair again on IG2G3 again. Hopefully they'll run east in a few hours on the return leg of this job.
2:40 CDT Lotsa trucks and men in orange safety vests are showing up... and a limegreen shade tent.

Perhaps I spoke too soon. Trucks and men have now shown up. They've put up a green tent next to the signal hut.
Serves me right for going out for an errand under the impression there would be no work today.

Trust me, I know - carrying 40+ on my bike during my Sunday route wasn't exactly a treat...

An eastbound UP Z train just cleared the diamonds on #1 track at 3:55; right behind him the welders get track and time from CPY063 to CPY083 until midnight (The diamonds are at MP 75.3). Their first work is 2 miles east of the diamonds so it sounds like they're taking advantage of the traffic lull to do work not directly related to the swapout at the diamonds.
As of 4:25 PM, it appears that all 16 rails have been severed and they are about to lift the old set of four diamonds up and take them away. Four sidewalk supervisors watching intently at the park.

Wish I was there. A few minutes ago one of them was waving at the camera. Could it be one of us forumees?

Looks like the old diamonds will be gone before dark.
Looks like the SouthEast diamond doesn't want to come up. Front loader has pulled and its back tires have left the ground with no effect on the BNSF Northeast - UP South East corner.
She does not want to leave
She has been freed
Finally, it rises. And a BNSF hirail truck has offloaded some material.
I wonder if they will store this one near the older one ..
After a while listening to the back up beepers on the machienry get on one's nerves.
BaltACD After a while listening to the back up beepers on the machienry get on one's nerves.
I was just wondering if when they went to sleep at the end of the day, do they continue to hear beep,beep,beep...
They have a lot of ear protection .. negating the safety of the beeps .. :)
The old diamond has now disappeared from the picture while being dragged to the east on the UP main.
I wonder why it was removed intact. There is already one old diamond in the right of way weeds about a block east of the crossing. It seems to me that having two emergency spares is redundant, and it would have been more easily removed had it been cut into two or more pieces prior to moving it.
(Edit to add)
I took a closer look at the old one on Google. It's a relic -- lots of missing ties and at least one rail for the UP just isn't there. I'm surprised it hasn't been picked up for scrap.
The old one in the weeds is cut in half ...
Caught a waver!!
The new diamonds are ready to drag in .. Quite a hole they have dug ..
It's about eight o'clock; it looks like the umpires are going to have the "game lights" turned on soon. Interesting watching the two big front-loaders ferrying ballast from the pile to the crossings. Pretty well choreographed.

Most important part of the entire replacement is now taking place - rebuilding the sub-grade to support the diamonds. Without a good foundation diamonds will fail prematurely.
