Who needs 8 hours of sleep anyway?

Really,

Some coffee and painkillers and I'm good to go!

BTW, I have just passed the twelve hour mark watching the webcam.

I don't understand some of what is going on, but here I am.

I checked out of the railfan track authority at 11:15, now checked back in. (Who needs 8 hours of sleep anyway?)

with a tamper going across the diamonds on the south UP track very deliberately

Thanks, I was wondering what that thing did.

Anyone hear what the new window is?

Nope, but it's still "open" at quarter to two, with a tamper going across the diamonds on the south UP track very deliberately, muck slower than they usually do on regular track. Many more probes with the "fingers" at each stop of the tamper.

It will be interesting to see how stack trains come through the crossing on UP in a week or two, seeing whether we are looking at the rock and roll hall of fame still.

This has been quite the show today and I think a lot of us have enjoyed it.

Nice lights, too.

get track and time from CPY063 to CPY083 until midnight

That would be expired now.

Anyone hear what the new window is?

The front loaders seem to drive over the rails with impunity.  Don't they worry about knocking them out of gauge? I seem to remember reading that even ordinary trucks have caused derailments after driving over tracks away from grade crossings and knocking the rails out of gauge.

Does anyone know whether BNSF & UP are just holding trains until work is done or rerouting by an alternate route? BNSF via Galesburg and UP via CN (ex IC) or some other route?

Did someone say it doesn't fit?

From what I've heard on the scanner they have tied down some trains at various locations; the latest was a westbound BNSF at CP Lease (South Rochelle)

That hi-rail truck backing on to the new diamonds would be the first use at 2247 CDT.

My guess is that they're holding trains (which they might do anyway, on account of the holiday).  They'll be done by morning.

What we need is for the folks who make “Railroad Alaska” to do a show on the replacement. They could add the drama of an intermodal container full of baby formula that desperately needs to make it to Chicago before little Timmy wakes up in the morning..

I'm beginning to think I prefer watching time lapse photography of diamond installations.

I'll stick with it for a while yet.

Quarter after nine, bright lights, smoothed surface and it appears that they are about the bring the new diamonds assembly to the crossing.  Pretty cool.

EDIT: Now about 9:20 and the assembly on the move east.  I kid you not, compared to choreographing this exercise, Bob Fosse was an amateur!

I remember reading somewhere that when they replaced the diamonds the last time they put asphalt in the bottom of the hole before adding ballast. I believe the reason cited was to control groundwater.

Most important part of the entire replacement is now taking place - rebuilding the sub-grade to support the diamonds.  Without a good foundation diamonds will fail prematurely.

It's about eight o'clock; it looks like the umpires are going to have the "game lights" turned on soon.  Interesting watching the two big front-loaders ferrying ballast from the pile to the crossings.  Pretty well choreographed.
