(off topic, but funny) ...Well I have gray...Why do you need it?
Posted by adrianspeeder on Saturday, June 12, 2004 6:41 PM
I was in the walmart parking lot with the diesel and my trailer of mowers and equipment, when a young woman came up to me and asked if i had black duct tape. I said no, I have gray (you keep duct tape in your trucks dont you?), why do you need it?
"Gray wont work. There is a hole in the side of my tire, and I need something to stop the leak."
Ummmm, what? Let me see.
By the time we got back to her tracker, the rim was almost to the ground. Being the nice guy that i am, I said i would fix the situation with the spare tire, and not duct tape.
Of course the spare was flat. Fortunitly it was not damaged, but just needed air. Glad i had the trailer, because i keep a tank of compressed air onboard.
Fifteen minutes and a thankyou, she was on her way. It wasnt till i was rolling that i realized what that woman was origionally planning to do. Leave it to her to find something that duct tape cant fix.
What do ya think, drivers getting stupider?

Haha, just put some tape on it and your good to go.....

Unreal.
I like the fact that she wanted black duct tape because the silver didn't match her tire color. [:)]

I had a friend try that once, but *GASP* it didn't work and then he asks me "why didnt that work?" i just said "Dude, think about it. You have a little piece of tape in a hole that is leaking air at 40psi while you are driving it." i sometimes seriously worry about the intellegence of some of my friends.

Obiviously they didn't loop it ALL the way around the tire. There, that should work, NOT [}:)] [;)] [:D]

Adrian, when I read your email I didn't know you were also going to post this. [:D] But I guess everyone deserves a laugh.

You know if you took that grey and used "that" stuff that Ron Popell sells, you know the spray paint for hair, and used the black not only could you paint the grey duck tape and make it black you might also use it to "repair" the tire. Why he claims it thickens hair, why not rubber? hahahahaha [}:)] [}:)] [}:)] [;)] [:p] [:D]

You can put the intelegance level blame on the government. I've noticed we learn things my dad learned at his age a good year or too before we learn it, i.e. we learn x in fifth grade, he learned x in 4th grade, it's really sad. I learn many things away from school and then they're taught to the whole class a little while later, or aren't really mentioned at all till a subject close to it comes up and I make a comment about it. Shows you what a little reading can do.

Whew! I'd be concerned about a date with that sort of woman unless you want to have a BIG family real fast. After all, if she thinks you can patch a tire with ductape, what will she use to patch a prophyliactic???!

Then again, peraps her choice of contraception is THE PATCH...lol...

I like a girlfriend to be at least able to change a tire. She also said "like" one too many times. I pulled this from a truck website because it fits...

Erik's Three Steps to Choosing a Wife
Guys ... for those that are not married. When out looking for the special woman in your life, ask at least this one question of your prospect.
Setup prior to arriving at her place
Place the following on your passenger side seat of the Bronco
1. Crescent wrench
2. 3/8 drive ratchet
3. Box end wrench
Pop the question
Now you're ready. When you open the bronco door for her (guys, always open the door for her, not sexist, it's just the right thing to do) say,
"ohh ya, umm would you please hand me the flare nut wrench?"
Analysis her response
If she replies with
1. A dirty look, -- find a new prospect
2. Hands you the ratchet, -- she's at least trying, and this is good
3. Replies, sorry I don't see a Line wrench, ya want the adjustable instead?, -- This my Bronco friends is a keeper!
Why this dissertation on "Erik's Three Steps to Choosing a Wife" you may ask??? Cuz my friends, the new tool box in my shop was Kayes idea, and the one she picked for me, is better than the one I would have picked for myself......

Funny- when I worked on multi-million dollar helos in the military duct tape (or hundred mile an hour tape) was standard issue. These days working on consumers daily drivers it can't be found in the shop. Now that they have COLORED duct tape...hmmm- the possibilities!
The best use of duct tape I ever saw was a Hoover vacuum cleaner motor with polarity reversed duct taped to the top of a quadrajet carb on an older Buick Riviera. A poor-mans supercharger!

Here is a classic train story concerning ductape.

One day I was assigned to a local with a single assigned freshly painted Conrail GP38. As I got on the front step to head out up the lead to put our train together I thought something was odd about the pilot of the unit, but I couldn't put my finger on it. Later as I was looking down while standing on the pilot I realized that it was crooked. Obviously the unit had been involved in a minor collision in the past. As I looked closer I noticed the 27 pin MU connector was at an odd angle. The base of it had been ductaped to the pilot. The really hilarious thing was that whomever had painted the unit had painted over several inches of the ductape without repairing the MU connector properly...

We had a good chuckle over that...

There is a lot of philosophy in the Conrail engineer's posting. Isn't it a simple analogy for USA transportation planning in general?

Heck - I saw an ad for CLEAR duct tape the other days. When you factor in duct tape dresses, that gets REAL interesting....[}:)]

You shouldn't be making fun of duct tape.

A few years back an NPR reporter for "All Things Considered" interviewed the leader of the Northern Minnesota Indian Tribe that is the leading producer of duct tape harvested from the duct tree. Seems that there were big problems, as I recall, caused by a growing demand for the extremely rare colors other than silver. I think there was also a broblem with demands to stop genetic research undertaken to produce a wider variety of colors. All of this was causing a great deal of stress on on a culture that had engaged in this work from pre-Columbian times.

I don't remember what year, but I am certain it was an April 1st broadcast.

....I don't know, the gal that asked Adrian for some tape did in fact drive away with air in her tire and not using duct tape...Of course by the good graces of help from Adrian but maybe that was her plan to get help...Playing not to know.
