while traveling in NE, UP was making a run with a 4 8 4 fron Cheyenne to Omaha and back. I was in Grand Island when the unit was on the return trip and made a 30 min stop. I have some pics., but I'm not a protographer. I would like to share them but do not know how to send them.

Thought this was interesting, if only because of how far the unit is from it's home. It a Genesee & Wyoming unit that I caught last week. It was working mu'd to a FerroSur unit in Apizaco, Tlaxcala, Mexico (about 2 hours east of Mexico City on the mainline to Veracruz). I'm assuming it's down here because G&W owns FCMM (Ferrocarril Chiapas-Mayab), which is located in the southeast part of the country. The unit must be on the FerroSur tracks as part of some power sharing agreement.

btw, I can't ID the diesel type. So if anyone out there can tell me what it is I'd appreciate it. I also couldn't find a G&W roster list to check the number against.

At the same place I caught this Mexican Army coach (?), occupied and placed in the middle of a freight train. Apparently the Army still uses the railroads to move personnel around. The reporting marks SDNX are "Secretaria de Defensa Nacional".

Hello Ed,

From your picture, it looks like a old SOUTHERN U23B, can't tell from picture if HIGH HOOD has been chopped or not. But with the stripes on the pilot and the road number, I would bet that's what it is/was. Might not have ever been in NORFOLK SOUTHERN paint.

I got another chance to chase the MALPM today(with a WSOR unit on the point this time). Here are a few of my photos from the day:

http://www.railimages.com/albums/noahhofrichter/ade.jpg
I started my Day at Merrimac WI, with photo at the bridge. Today wasn't bad up here weather wise, but of course a cloud decided to block to sun right as the train made it's way out onto the bridge.

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=115439
The Next photo comes at the Highway 113 crossing. I just, and I mean just made it to the crossing in time for this shot. I actually took it out of the window of the car!

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=115440
The Next is the good old Baraboo Depot. Here the MALPM backs up to drop off the Plastics car for temporary storage on the team track.

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=115449
With all the backing up, I got a chance to move to another spot to get this shot as the Locomotive backed up to go back to it's train in Baraboo.

http://www.railimages.com/albums/noahhofrichter/adf.jpg
Next they went to Perry Judd Printing, where I got a shot of the short trackage of "street running"(if you can really even call it that, it just crosses an area where a parking lot meets a street, probably 100 feet long or so).

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=115444
Now a new angle that you folks haven't seen from me at least before. This is from the Highway 12 bridge in Baraboo. Usually I stand off to the side and look down the hill at it, but this time I walked right up next to the track on the bridge for the shot.

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=115445
Now it's on to Rock Springs near the Co-op in town. The Moon can be very faintly seen over the closest grain bin, I take it he's a railfan too! [;)]

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=115447
This Next shot show the train arriving at Reedsburg, just about to cross South Dewey Ave. He had to pick up one lumber flat and drop off three Cars of Plastic in town today.

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=115458
And my Parting Shot of the day. After leaving the rest of it's train back near the short pass, 3801 moves ahead to go into the switchback to pick up an Empty Lumber car at the Hartje Lumber Spur.

All and all I had a good day, but then again anyday with a WSOR train is a good day......[;)]

I spotted some unusual-looking cars in a train on CP in Kenosha County
while coming back from Bristol Renaissance Faire today, so I turned around
and got a couple pictures of 'em at Wepco:
www.fuzzyworld3.com/rr04.html

So my question is... where were they coming from??? What were they doing in Cheese-land??? And who's building them???

Enjoy!

We have a variety of other railroads power coming into North Little Rock but this is the first time I have been close and personal with it. [:D]

I will try and post a pic of it later, that is if the photo is good enough to post. [;)]

Took this shot from the Trans-Canada about 10 miles south of Lytton, in the Fraser River Valley. CPR mixed struggling against the grade and curves. I thought it was a pretty sight.

i saw a couple of trains. First was a NS lashup with 3 Dash9s, and a bunch of intermodal, as well as piggy back cars, saw 2 CSX Dash 9s on a mixed freight with boxcars, piggy back, tank cars, gondolas, and so on. Also saw the New Hope and Ivyland's mixed freight with the GP 9 at the front, as well as the 2-8-0 pulling the passenger. I live right near Warminster, and sometimes hang out at the station, and at the switching facility near the end of the septa line, where the NHI, and the SEPTA meet

Sunday saw a train along CN coming back from fishin'. Went around the corner and saw the FRED (Flashing Rear End Device). It had 5 engines, about 15 or so cars. It was probably heading to Brighton to pick up some lumber. First train I've seen in a while.

Saw two Amtrak Hiawatha service trains (one Northbound the other Southbound) at the Sturtevant, WI station at the same time for a meet. I was on my way up to Hartford, WI and stopped for a burger at the station and was listening to my scanner when the two Hiawathas came into the Sturtevant station within about one minute of each other and were in the station together for about two minutes or so. An Asian couple with a little kid boarded the Northbound train to Milwaukee which seemed strange as Milwaukee is only about 25 miles away and a taxi might have been cheaper to take but perhaps they wanted the kid to have a train ride. This was the first time I have seen two Amtraks at this station at the same time...think it is a rare occurance. The usual old time railfans were there in their lawn chairs with scanners. Just as I was about to leave the gates came down and the local switching power came into the station area engine lite to lock her up for the night (an ex SOO GP38 I believe), they lock her up on a spur at the station and shut the unit down and lock the doors before leaving.

I got a chance to chase the MALPM yesterday, the WSOR train that runs up to my town. Here are some photos from the trip:

I started at Merrimac, The train was right on time. It was a total suprise to see the SD40-2's on the point! The WSOR has never that I know of run a Ballast train and the MALPM at the same time! I was sad at first, but quickly got over that when I realized that the unit on the point was a Patched CNW unit!!!!!! Here's a photo from the bridge: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=114757 The units were 2990, 2961, and the WSOR's own 2054. The Ballast cars filled up the bridge from end to end!

Next I went to the Highway 136 crossing for a nice curve shot: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=114764

After that it was on to Baraboo. He had a drop off of a centerbeam at Singer Lumber, and a Flambeau car to put on the team track. That made for a lot of passing by the depot, and myself and three other railfans made good use of the time. Here's my best shot: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=114759 I like this one because of the coincidence that the CNW unit is patched, and the Windows on the Old CNW depot are patched(or closed if you like) up.

They skiped doing the work they had in Baraboo until the trip back, so with that it was off to Rock Springs to Dump off the Two SD40-2's and the ballast cars. Here's a shot from the Highway 12 Bridge in Baraboo: http://www.railimages.com/albums/noahhofrichter/acz.jpg

The arrived at Rock Springs a little later, and I got a shot passing by the Co-op in town: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=114765

And the last shot of the day came as they left Rock Springs, now with only one engine and three cars: http://www.railimages.com/albums/noahhofrichter/ada.jpg They went from there to Reedsburg Were they switched Pace Plastics.

So that's my report from the day. Had I known that the UP units were leading I might not have even gone, but now I'm glad I did. It was a good day all around.

Yesterday I got the chance to go do a little railfanning over in Wisconsin Dells at Boman Road of the CP line through there. Here's what I saw:

3:15 4431 in SOO red/white and 4426, in the CP golden Beaver scheme led a short manifest train. This was just as we were getting there, so no photo of this one.

3:45 A full SOO consist, 4443 and 4442, led a small unit hopper train though the Dells. Here's a photo for those of you that requested one:
http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=114300

3:57 Another CP freight came through right on the heels of the last train, led by four units, 9622, 5913, CEFX 2801, & CEFX 2805, an AC4400CW and three SD40-2's respectfully. This was another Mixed Freight train:
http://www.railimages.com/albums/noahhofrichter/acv.jpg

These last two photos aren't as good, as the shadows moved onto the track, but I still wanted a sunny shot, so I had to zoom in a little.

5:53 There was a long, long break in traffic, but then all of a sudden a Mixed frieght, filled with Auto Frames and 60' hi-cube boxcars came around the far curve. The lone GE unit, 8532, was working hard and could be heard for a good minute before it came around the curve:
http://www.railimages.com/albums/noahhofrichter/acw.jpg

6:02 The last Freight was just barely ahead of #7, the Empire Builder, running about ten minutes late, led by 198 and 200:
http://www.railimages.com/albums/noahhofrichter/acx.jpg

With that the shadows moved farther onto the track, and so I headed home.

During a weekend stay in Hancock, NY (on the old Erie main - Port Jervis to Binghampton):

Westbound a manifest lead by 4 CSX engines.

Eastbound a BNSF norange, BN Green, and two Suzie-Qs leading a manifest.

Both were early morning (after dawn), and I was too far away (literally on a mountaintop) to get any more details. There are about 6 crossings in Hancock, and very close together, so one hears plenty of music. It's interesting that from the mountaintop you can hear the trains coming from a good distance in both directions, while down in the village your first indication is often the first crossing gates. The old double track truss bridge across the Delaware River also provides a distinct sounding board - you can definitely tell when they reach it and when the last car clears. The screeches and pings of the very tight curve don't carry well to the mountaintop, though.

Another train came through about 2:30 one morning. The engineer was very respectful of the community (which was mostly asleep at that hour), keeping the use of the horn to an absolute minumum. During daylight they just let it rip.
