Posted by bnsfkline on Sunday, June 17, 2007 12:02 PM

On Friday, I will be in Peoria heading to Galsburg, does anyone know where the F-Units are kept?

I believe they are most often found in their East Peoria yard.

F units.  I talked to a conductor friend of mine on the TPW like friday, and he said nothing about F units.

Jim are you sure you have the right railroad? Tazewell and Peoria doesn't have any F units. Neither does the TP&W.  See rosters on Craig Rutherford's website at the following link http://www.thedieselshop.us/

In fact the F units you are looking to find don't go to Peoria. You need to look a little further west and south.

The railroad you are thinking of is the Peoria and Western, which runs on TP&W's former west end. The units are stored in Mapleton, which is about 10 miles south of Peoria on route 24. The units run to Canton, but they also run up to the TZPR Yard in East Peoria sometimes.

The Keokuk Junction Railway (still the legal name) runs these units, making two cycles each week between Mapleton and La Harpe and between Mapleton and East Peoria. On Mondays and Thursdays, the train can be seen departing Mapleton or Canton for La Harpe, usually by late morning. The return trip east is usually from late afternoon/early evening from La Harpe on Tuesdays and Fridays. Turns to East Peoria are made from Canton on Wednesdays and Saturdays, usually from 9:00am.

TZPR (Tazewell & Peoria RR) does not have any F-units and never did, nor did predecessor, Peoria & Pekin Union. The TP&W's F-7A was moved to New York in 1998.

Thats right.  TPW does not have any F units any more.  When I transfered out and back to TExas, they had:

2 SD 45-2t, 9401, and 9395

2 GP 40 canadian cabs, 4055, and 4053

2 GP 38, 3821 and 3830

I think 1 GP 40, 4020

2 SW 1500, 1500 and 1501

Those are the only ones that I remiber,  I if I remeber correctly TPW gave up the 3878 for the 2 SW 1500's.  I have seen pictures of the old UP unit, probably the same unit that the TPW brought from the wsry since they let it run out of oil.  It was a Gp-40.

Last Monday (Feb 18th) the F's and a RSD-3 unit were at Mapleton, tied up in a siding.  The units were shut off.  A discussion on this forum revealed the units do not run during the winter months.  The units are very easily spotted from US 24.

Good luck.

One more thing.  If you are heading back to StL from Galesburg and pass thru Brown County (Mt. Sterling) set your cruise control at 60mph.  I have had 2 tickets there including last monday.

That's an RS-3M. It has an EMD engine. It was used year-round on the Pioneer Industrial Railway in 1998-2005.

The TP&W had 2 of them when they were owned by the NYS&W the road numbers wrer 1500 & 1501 I think they went east to the NYS&W when they sold the TP&W to Rail America.
