Report from NSCSXRailfan

CSX Coal train U324 derailed in Smithfield NC (near Selma) putting 24
loaded coal cars on the ground. The crew was ok and they proceeded
with the first part of the train. It happened on the single track
causing many delays. Most trains were held up, rerouted or canceled.
PO52/53 (The Auto Train) was rerouted up the CSX S line which
currently has a 10mph speed resriction from Fetner Jct (in Cary) to
Hamlet which caused significant delays. PO91/92 was rerouted a few
days ago due to the slow order up the A Line but due to the derailment
is ending at Hamlet and the passengers will be bused. My freind Paul did make it
out to Smithfield and got a few photos of the derailment and MOW crews
at work. The photos can be viewed at

They were fortunate to be in a location that was simultaneously remote from human traffic and readily accessible by machinery.

Those cars are really twisted, too.
