High short hoods on diesels

I do alot of my train watching along Norfolk Southern's lines and I was wondering why they have so many diesels that were built with high short hoods. I belive that it was a carry over from Southern because I remember that about all I ever saw in the pre merger days were high hood EMD's with the black,white, and gold paint. Does anyone know the reasons for building one like this?

Both Norfolk and Western and Southern Railqway stuck with high hood Diesels long after other railroads went to low short hoods. Both railroads continued to operate their locomotives long hood forward for safety reasons for many years after other railroads decided that there was greater visibility for the engineer if operated short hood forward. Both N&W and SOU also believed there was greater protection for the crew in grade crossing collisions with a high short hood when locomotives were operated short hood forward.

This is the same bunch of GOOBERS that refused to install sanitary toilet facilities in the late 1990's, demanding that their crews releive themselves in plastic bags. What would you expect from such a bunch of forward thinkers??

While I particularly never liked using the infamous NS locomotive tolites, is it really less sanitariy then the retention system other railraods use? ( I avoid these also.)Besides this is a discussion about High/Low Short Hoods on locomotives not toliets.
