A choice of "The lesser of two evils" so I voted for Mike's "Malt Shop" photo; though the far better picture was the BNSF looooooooong train: too bad it wasn't selected as the contest entry -- an awesome perspective and appearant action. Anyway, stay warm... Cowboy [C):-)]  DadH

As usual I enjoyed both pictures.  I went with Mike's picture because it told more of a story to me.  I think I would have went with Erik's picture if it had been a wider shot.  It was to tight for my taste.

The Amtrak shot is great...but it didn't get my vote.  It's just a little too cut-and-dried...too routine...almost staged looking.

The UP switching job is intriguing...lots of interesting rough edges... definitely not a beauty contest winner, but different enough that I thought it deserved my vote.

Erik, your shot is excellent.  The rain drops are GREAT, though I had to strain the old eyes to see.  I had to vote for Mike's shot, though, because of the more active & interesting background.  Sorry, I'm just an active kind of guy.

Keep up the good work,

I have to say that I did like the small little switch job over the mainline this time.  But my question is of the Amtrak train that Bergie didn't submit.  I just found it odd that the baggage car was 4 cars back.  Is there any rhyme or reason to that?

Erik, I voted for your Amtrak shot this time because of what the details showed.  If you know what to look for, you can see the heat bloom off of all three engines and know they're working hard.  You can easily see the water on the rails and imagine the stress in the engineer's mind as he/she jockey's the train along.

The other thing this 3 engine shot tells me, either the engines are getting old (high breakdown chance) or the train is fully loaded (high revenue).  Personally, I hope for the fully loaded train.

Hey guys! You usually do such a great job with the pics (I have a whole bunch of them rotating on my screen as a screensaver).... but I feel a little let down. So let down, in fact, that I didn't even vote. Personally I don't think that either of the pics were up to your usual standards.

Get back out there and take some great pictures!

Glad to see this is back.  I voted for Amtrak, because the UP seemed to be dwarfed by the building in the background.  It was a tough vote, as neither one was up either of these guys standards.  It was like going to be excited at your choices of a rental car.  A four dour Dodge Neon or a four door Ford Focus.

I just voted for the Amtrak photo, then read other comments and realized I'd voted for dark and dreary instead of happy sunshine.  I guess when it rains all day, most days, you're not sure what all that brite yellow stuff is.  Anyway, both good photo's guys.  Larry of the Pacific NW

This week's vote was a tough choice for me.

Erik's Amtrak picture seems to evoke more of a forlorn feel in me than Mike's UP photo does based on the dark, cloudy skies and snow, and this was the tie-breaker for me. Mike's photo actually made me feel more reminiscent; it sort of reminds me of the daily afternoon BNSF local that I regularly see along the southern part of the Glorieta Sub, but then the malting facility in the background reminds me a great deal of similar facilities I've seen along the BNSF Transcon through the Belen Cutoff (i.e., the Clovis Sub) between Fort Sumner and Clovis, NM. The deep snow on the ground also gives me the feel of the "through all-weather" persistence of train operations, another kind of reminiscent feel. Hmm.

I actually like Mike's New Carlisle photo with the lead BNSF engine more, as that gives me more of an action feel and a great "comin' at ya" shot. The orange late afternoon light also creates an awesome mood to the photo. I personally would have preferred that one for this week's vote.
