To wit: if the truth is gonna hurt, better to go out of your way and lie, to avoid offending sensitivities. Being uncivil, to my way of thinking, is the polar opposite. To wit:  going out of your way hoping to offend someone. In each instance, the term "whether they deserve it or not"  probably has application.
