Truck-train collision in Neoga injures two

NEOGA - A Lovington man was hospitalized after the pickup truck in which he was riding weaved past a railroad crossing signal and collided with an Amtrak train Saturday evening in Neoga, according to the Illinois State Police.

State police said Michael A. Howell, 24, of Neoga allegedly was intoxicated about 6:15 p.m. Saturday when he drove his GMC truck into the Seventh Street railroad crossing, only to be struck by a northbound Amtrak train.

None of the 50 train passengers were hurt, but Zachary Smith, 23, of Lovington was in the pickup and sustained serious injuries, said police.

Smith was taken to Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon.

Howell received minor injuries but was not taken to a hospital. He was arrested for driving under the influence and also was ticketed for disobeying a railroad crossing signal and illegally transporting alcohol.

Another passenger in the pickup, Tony Price, 44, of Neoga, also sustained minor injuries but refused treatment at the scene, police said.
