Bayshore Yard
Posted by rockisland4309 on Tuesday, January 16, 2007 3:01 PM

Hey guys,

This past weekend I was in San Francisco and I couldn't find where Espee's Bayshore Yard used to be.  Does anyone know where it was located?  Also, what year did Espee close and pull up the yard? Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Mike

Here's a pic that was taken of Bayshore Yard from San Bruno mountain in 1982.  So, if you know where that is...

If you go north on I101 from San Bruno, the Bay will be on your right (east side) and the yard woul be on your left (west side).  As I remember it is just north of the Cow Palace which is on the same side as the yard.

The former Southern Pacific  Bayshore Yard was roughly located along Bayshore BLVD

between Visitacion Ave and  Tunnel Ave.   This is located just south of the San Francisco city and county limit southern boundary which is located at Sunnydale Ave & Bayshore Blvd.   The former yard was located just behind some industries which fronted on most of Bayshore BLVD.   Currently the former yard area is a giant vacant lot.   This is eventually supposed to be somehow developed once the toxics are cleaned up.

The SP Bayshore roundhouse WAS located very near the intersection of Bayshore BLVD &  Industrial Way.

South of Sunnydale Ave you are in San Mateo Count.   I believe that this area is in the city of Brisbane, CA.

Bayshore Yard was closed in the early 1980s (1982??) due to the RADICAL deindustrialization of San Francisco.   To give you some idea of how much freight was lost consider this fact.   The former SP Peninsula mainline WAS the BUISIEST  freight line in the ENTIRE SP SYSTEM at one point (WW 2 era probably).  We are now down to only 2 freight jobs per day that on the now Caltrain commuter line.  These freight jobs run on the mostly passenger only line north from Santa Clara (Control Pont Coast)to the sidings at South San Francisco.   South of Santa Clara the now UP usually runs several trains to and from the Oakland area south to Los Angeles on the now secondary former SP Coast Line.   CP Coast is located at the Santa Clara Caltrain platform which is located just opposite the Santa Clara University campus.

A Google Map of the Bayshore Yard area is in this "TinyURL"  link:

I hope this helps to explain some of the basics of the former Bayshore Yards!

Wow!!! That's amazing!! Did SP basically not want the business and gave it to the truckers?  Or did heavy industry move out of the Bay Area?  Also, how many trains a day did SP run to Bayshore during the 60's and 70's?  Thank you for the info.
