Rough day for Metra (Chicago) on Friday 12/8...

In addidtion to the shooting that took place in the office tower above Ogilvie Transportation Center that closed the station from approximately 3:30pm to 5:20pm there were two other incidents that affected Metra service on Friday 12/8.

At approximately 3pm a Metra Milwaukee West District westbound train enroute to the Elgin station slammed into a mivivan carrying eight people - five childeren - that either went around the gates, or became trapped between the gates stuck in traffic in downtown Elgin. Two women and an infant were killed. Another child was in very serious condition. Nobody on the train was hurt.

Later, Metra Heritage Corridor trains to Joliet were delayed for over an hour after a westbound freight train struck a pedestrian in Romeoville. I do not know the condition of the pedestrian.

The Ogilvie/Citicorp incident hogged the evening news reports last night.  From what my wife was telling me, there were two trains involved in the Elgin incident--going around the gates after the first train cleared, and right into the path of the second one.
