Tom, <br /> <br />I think that steam had less likelyhood of road failure than the early diesel consists, precisely because steam utilized more preventive maintenance as part and parcel of regular maintenance. Conversely, those diesels had many more "maintenance free" parts that, due to the lack of *required* maintenance, were more likely to fail out in the middle of nowhere, e.g they didn't bother to check every wire and relay everytime, did they?
