Interesting topic. Thanks for kicking it off, SLIC. I'm downloading the AC-130 footage now, as I need it for a project I'm doing on USAF gunships. You see, my father flew the AC-47 "Puff the Magic Dragon"/"SPOOKY" gunships in the Vietnam war. These were the 1st of the side firing gunships, basically a modified DC-3 from the 1930s, with three 7.62mm(.308 to the civilians) GE miniguns. These are electrically operated Gatling guns capable of 6000 round a minute each. He was an instructor pilot who took part in the testing of the system, then got shipped out to Thailand with the 4th Air Commando Squadron. Their missions were to bust trucks on the Ho Chi Min trail, as well as saving literally thousands of firebases, villages, outposts, etc. If a gunship is overhead, and he's ON YOUR SIDE, you can not lose, it's that simple.
He would put the plane in a banking left-hand turn, aim out his side window, kick out some flares, then rain lead down on the badguys, often within meters of the good guys. Total devastation from above, and as every 5th round was a tracer, it was a real pretty light show, too. Also very vulnerable to ground fire. No happy ending...
I forget, how did we get from train hopping to gunships??? I'm just glad I got the link to the footage.

Also I read in a magazine the history of the modern AC130 gunship. I don't remember if the 7.62 was the first or second minigun used. Yes at first the early gunships were reachable by ground fire and some were shot down. They changed and went to a larger round and this helped solve the problem. If I remember right the current AC130s carry a minigun, a 40 mil, and a 75 or 105 howitzer. They showed a pic of one hovering and the tracers were just like a circle of fire falling from the sky. It was at night and made a cool pic. The early models had the minigun mounted on a wooden skid. Some of the people might remember the John Wayne (my hero and favorite actor) movie "The Green Berets". In the movie a U.S. base was overrun by the VC. The marines called in Puff. I read somewhere that Puff could put a shell every square inch the length of a football field in one pass. Pretty amazing isn't it? After a pass or two from Puff there were no more VC. Wonder where they all went? lol . Today the AC130s are an awsome weapon. As VSmith said fire from above.

I have a t-shirt I bought that says, " G E . . . We bring good things to life. Then it has a pic of the minigun. Pretty funny stuff. At least I think so.

OK, Jim, at first they tried a bunch of Browning .50 calibers on the DC-3, then the settled on the GE Miniguns. That's the AC-47s you saw in "The Green Berets". After a bunch were shot down in '66 they decided to go with something bigger for the plane and guns, that could therefore fly higher, like the AC-119 "Flying Boxcar" (Train-related discussion now??) but that was just an interim measure until more C-130s could be diverted from their primary job of pulling freight into small airstrips. The AC-130 had 7.62mm miniguns, 20mm gatling guns, and then also 40mm Bofors cannons, plus a lot of imaging technology like IR cameras, TV, truck motor ignition sensors and what-not, to seek and destroy in the dark. Then some seriously sick and excellent guy figured out that you could put a 155(?) mm howitzer in the beast, and blow some BIG holes in whatever was ailing you. There's a 5-man crew operating the electronic sensors and feeding the pilot the info he needs, 2-7.62mm miniguns, 2- 20mm gats, 2- 40mm Bofors cannons, and one huge howitzer, all firing down from the left side of the plane, which has to be in a banking turn to bring them on target. The AC-130s also have a megamillion candlepower spotlight, flares, and fresh cinnabuns for the crew. Thanks for your interest. I want one of those cool T-shirts.
Oh yeah, the original Puffs could only put a round into each square FOOT of a football field. That should be enough, though, right??

They used to have a bunch of military type t-shirts. I got up a big order between work and A & P school and order them. They had some nice shirts and some funny shirts and some no so funny shirts. [}:)] [;)] [8D]

well another rainy day for me but now i have a better view of the tracks i seen up workers bustin *** working the iron they do a great job any body have pictures of the james e strate carnival train (not ringleader girls & elephant & clown rapers circus)
my old job as a carnie put me on this train theres 40 pass cars 20 flats & 1power car
locos are leased from CSX & NS they travel the eastern seaboard 10 months outta the year im currently on winter vacation what good its doing well let me know

I have a tape about Alcos and on the tape the man talks about using only 2 Alcos and pulling the whole circus train.

I stood next to one of these thing listening to the flying change hitting the ground. Ya aint kidding about losing all the change in your pockets, wallets, cellphones, dentures, shoes, lunch, breakfast and dinner you aint eaten yet! They had to stop every now and then and let people sort thru the items on the pavement below the ride. Very Funny.
