Have an opportunity to go to Tehachapi area for some train watching. I'm familiar with the train watching sites from the Sand Cut to the town of Tehachapi. Are ther any good sites for Train viewing from the town eastward down the hill to Mojave?
If so is there a map or guide to these locations? Any help would be appreciated.
It looks like Tehachapi Boulevard parallels the tracks for a while from eastern Tehacahapi. http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&z=16&ll=35.127596,-118.416288&spn=0.009652,0.023539&t=h&om=1.
A couple of years ago I stopped at Cameron Road to look at an SP pile driver and tender that was parked out there. http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&om=1&z=16&ll=35.099441,-118.293078&spn=0.009656,0.023539&t=h
You may be allowed to pull of off the side of the road on the old Highway 58 north of Mojave. http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&om=1&z=16&ll=35.100635,-118.184717&spn=0.009655,0.023539&t=h
You can get to the east side of the Mojave yard at the north end. However, the neighborhood looks a bit rough. http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&om=1&z=16&ll=35.055364,-118.172958&spn=0.009661,0.023539&t=h

Tehachapi blvd is paved and on the south side of the tracks. Most trains pick up speed east of Tehachapi. There is an overpass just east of town for shade, weather protection. This road goes all the way to Monolith and a bit east there is a onramp for 58.
Down around Warren there are several places where you can access the service roads that follow the tracks into Mojave. They are dirt so be warned. But there are many places in this area to railfan at. There is usually a nice breeze through there too.
At the east end of Mojave you can park under the overpass where the BNSF heads east and the UP heads tward LA / West Colton. Again there is shade there. Just head south out of Mojave and make a left at the first left hand turnout, cross the northbound lanes and then turn left following the access road.
All of these are good spots.
