Often as long as a hundred years ago. <br /> <br />We have a number of bridges here that despite being dual track, one can see that the builder designed the abutments to be ready made to accept additional parallel spans. <br /> <br />And I suspect that preexisting infastructure such as that, weighs into the decision on which routes will be kept, and which are expendable.
