Midwestern where is it-no photos, only clues
After running it past Murphy Siding I decided to try my hand at this Midwest where is it thing.
so here we go.....
In 1853, the tracks of two railroads meet on the open prairie and a station was established
The station was given an Indian name meaning, "where two trails meet"
In 1904 another railroad crossed through this town, but buy then it was too late to change the name.
By the 1990s only one Railroad Company remained in town.
Can you name the town & the railroad companies?
Thanks to Chris / CopCarSS for my avatar.
Is it in IL?
is it in IL,
Yes
Downstate?
NO.
P.S. Where exactly does upstate become Downstate?
Downstate means anywhere in Illinois outside of "Chicagoland".
upon that Clarification
the answer to the "downstate" question is
Yes.
Mendota.
Don't be surprised if Dale knows this one off the top of his head too.
Not much else up there these days !
I thought about Mendota, since the Burlington and IC were 1850's, and the Milw. also came through, but the Indian meaning is "big spring". This is a good puzzler.
Ding, Ding, Ding. We have a Winner!!!
Mendota Illinois.
The tracks of the Chicago and Aurora (Chicago, Burlington & Quincy) met those of the Illinois Central, and in 1904 the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad.
As for the indian Name that part came from the book "The 100 Year story of Mendota IL. 1953 Magnificent Whistle Stop."
it is also mentioned in these websites.

good job...
if I do this again, I will have to make it harder
Later Bill
My oops on indian name.

Trailryder: (and everyone else) I just wanted to point out, that you sure don't need to have my pemission, or anybody else's to post a "where is it thing": or anything else for that matter. The way I see it, the more posters who share information, the merrier. It all started when Chad Thomas kind of ran out of photos for his "Western where is it". I kind of missed having to wrack my brain on those. It's always fun to learn something new, I did, in fact, look up Mendota, Illinois on a map. just to see what we were talking about.
-Murphy Siding (sitting here wishing he could come up with a "where is it" that could stump Dale in nanaimo)

Murph,
You stumped me with Wall, SD. I would have never gotten that one. Aberdeen was answered before I figured it out as well.

Whew! I'm feelin' better now. Of course, Wall S.D. never was much of a rail center. Unless you've "Dug Wall Drug", it probably doesn't come to mind at all.
