Posted by alcodave on Thursday, July 13, 2006 10:12 PM
why do i have to be a subscriber to read the news wire and model product news? i have always enjoyed taking the monthly trip to the hobby shop too purchase the latest issues of trains and model railroader.i have been a loyal reader for almost twenty years. i guess i am going to stop reading the news wire on a weekly basis.i refuse to be pressured into changing my habits after all these years.please give us back the trains news wire!

Erik Bergstrom explained sometime last week. I do not remember what thread it was in. You may try searching for newswire in posts made by Bergie.

If the newswire is important enough to you, subscribe. This particular change has been griped about enough already on both "sides" of the forum Dead [xx(]Evil [}:)]

I also am very displeased with the fact you have to subscribe to view the "newswire".I understand that this site cost money to keep up and running. But I think alot of the news that is reported on the site such as that in "newswire" is submitted for free by the visitors to this site.So should the editors pay those people who submit news articles ? No I think people should just quit submitting "free" news to the editors since the "newswire" site is no longer free.I work on the NS and have always enjoyed seeing news on "newswire" about the NS and the other railroads.I will still enjoy visiting the TRAINS.COM site, but I just won't have that same welcome, come on in and set down felling.Sorry but I think this decession by TRAINS was a wrong one.Disapprove [V]My 2 cents [2c]

If you are REALLY that upset, you should consider starting your own newswire service, I'm sure you could get the same information from other sources, and run your own.

There would be no crime if you thereafter used Trains newswire service just to make sure you were covering "everything". if you get my drif. Just make sure that your own sources were independant.

Just be glad they aren't charging "extra" for the newswire service.  I'm sure Kalmbach could have easily made this an extra subscription service in addition to the magazine subscriptions.

To put it another way, don't derail the train just because it's not on your track.

I believe the subscription requirement is a very shortsighted attempt to raise circuilation.  While I enjoyed the NewsWire, I'll now get my railroading news at the competitions web sites.

I am on the road constantly & sometimes don’t get by the house for several months. I usually catch Trains & MR on the fly. The new system is driving me %^$&^%*().

Can someone figure out what is happening to my messages?

It is not unusual in other media (like newspapers) to have subscriber only content but they seem to have found if it is too tightly controlled, they lose.

I think that the policy Kalmbach has taken, only being able to access magazine specific content if you subscribe to that specific magazine, is short sighted and will result in people turning to other sources.  Should be if you subscribe to any train related magazine, you get full access to the entire trains.com site.  My 2 bits (cdn  Big Smile [:D])

We all got a free lunch here for a long time. I wish I didn't have to put stamps on mail, pay for my gasoline or have taxes deducted from my paycheck, either. I also think I should not have to pay for cable TV or highway tolls.

But I think it's really rude to complain about anything you are getting (or have been getting) for free.

Would you go to work for free? Because the persons at Kalmbach who work hard to provide the NewsWire service like to eat, too.

Period.
