The Big Boys of the regional railroads ?
Posted by Kozzie on Wednesday, May 31, 2006 10:55 PM
Over on the railpictures website I noticed there are quite a few regional/short lines. Which of the regional lines would be larger ones? Large as, I suppose, track network? Or are they fairly close in size?

I realize that, by definition, they wouldn't be in the league of the Class 1s, but just a general idea of the larger regionals would be interesting, since there seems to be so many in different parts of the country. [;)] [:)]

Dave,
I am doing a summary of the Regional Railroads in the United States, both the 31 existing ones and the 30 former ones. It is about 60% complete and should be done in a week or two. If you want to have a look, it is at

The P&W is my fave modern railroad (I live in RI 2 blocks from the East Providence secondary) but I would point out that it is a dwarfed by some other regionals (many out West but even Guilford is much larger)..........................................

Kozzie: Something else you might enjoy surfing: The web sites of some of the regional/shortline systems:
Locally there is the Watco Companies of Pittsburg, Ks. that has become a large operator of lines spun off by various other rail roads:
http://www.watcocompanies.com/railroads.htm
Another company is RailAmerica @
http://www.railamerica.com/railmaps.htm
The shortline railroads and regionals have taken over much of the lighter trafficed branchlines and lighter mainline ops from the Class I's.
This website will provide some access to many sites for various shortlines and regionals:
http://www.aslrra.org/home/index.cfm
Hope you can enjoy some of these sites.
Sam

Here's another big former one: BC Rail. Hundreds of miles of mainline run with the biggest engines of the time, and yet still considered a regional.

The Florida East Coast FEC is a reginal railroad that operates all within one state i.e. intrastate. It is up near the top of reginal railroads. It also in the last 10 years celibrated its 100 aniversary. With the same name for most of that time. It has only ever operated EMD equipment since dieselization. [2c] As always ENJOY
