Who said anything about the four short trains needing to be made up at the same time? They can be made up and dispatched one after the other. Since they will exit the yard quicker than the long consist, the same space is available sooner. Track capacity increases with greater expediency. <br /> <br />You also forget the customer service aspects of running more direct trains. Just because you consider rail customers to be an unfortunate necessity doesn't mean you gain anything by deliberately slowing their orders.
