US Museums

I have visited Green Bay, St Louis, Baltimore and Sacramento railroad museums (also Montreal).
Are there any others in the US that are comparable and worth a visit?

I would add The Railroaders Memorial Museum in Altoona,PA Steamtown in Scranton, PA, and the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg, PA.

Come to Colorado! We have the Durango & Silverton, The Cumbres & Toltec, The Georgetown loop. and the Leadville Colorado & Southern. e also have some museums with static displays, Like the Colorado railroad museum, and Forney Transportaion museum. Their is also a museum in Plueblo. with a Santa Fe 4-8-4. On your visit do not miss the opportunity to visit Cheyenne, the home of Up Challenger #3985, Northern #844, and Centennial #6936.

Don't miss the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, along I-90 between Chicago and Rockford. If you've never been there you'll be surprised by the amazing variety of power that's there.

Check out the Illinois Railway Museum in Union and the Mid-continent Railway museum in North Freedom, Wisconsin which is near Circus world in Baraboo.

After baltimore you should have driven to Roanoke VA to the Virginia museum of transportation home to the N&W's 611-J and 1218.
Scheduled some vacation time myself this summer going to try to make it to Bellvue Oh.

For those interested in the Illinois Railway Museum (I have been to many museums, this is the best by far), visit www.irm.org and you will get a really good idea of what you will see while there. Jim, Aurora, IL

come to minnesota we have the minnesota transportation museum in st paul, oceola st crox vally railway in oseola ws, lake superior transportation museum in duluth, this maybey tractor related but there is two operational steam locomotives soo line 0-6-0 353 and dresser traprock 0-4-0 3 and 5. than we have a new museum just getting ready to start up it is called the gopher state railroad museum in new prage wed sit is gsrm.org. also while you are here check out north east minneapolis for milwaukee road 261 i am shure steve will alow you in the shop. hope this helps big boy

I like the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport, Maine. It's mostly steetcars/interurbans, but a large collection and friendly, approachable staff. Last time I was there I said that I'd never managed to ride a certain car and they went and pulled it out of the barn and put it inservice for the afternoon!

I found the Texas State Railroad State Park interesting in Rusk, Texas. They operate trains from Rusk to Palestine along a former prison railroad. At Rusk, you can actually see the men working on the locomotives. Wonderful scenery in East Texas.

How is the B+O rebuilding of the roundhouse progressing, there isnt much info here on it
Oh and am off in 1hr to video a steam loco on a trip tgrough my local station

I especially liked the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden and the Nevada Railway Museum in Carson City.

The best time to visit IRM is during their Railfan weekend, usually in early fall or Labor Day in September. The great thing about that weekend is that they pull out all the stops and usually have steam, vintage diesel, and the Zephyr running on their short excursion line. It is difficult to take it all in in one day if you are inclined to linger at all.
