Trains Make The News Again, and Again, and Again...
Posted by UPTRAIN on Thursday, December 8, 2005 10:33 PM
I saw it twice in about 20 minutes tonight, lol. After seeing a thing about a plane running off a runway in Chicago on The Weather Channel, my dad flipped the TV over to Fox News, we watched a live report. The Southwest Airlines plane had skidded off the runway, through a wall and onto a street at Midway Airport, hitting 2 vehicles. Now, the neat part for a railfan: Right behind the reporter was a crossing gate, down and bell ringing. He mentioned that "their view would be blocked because a freight train was coming". Now, I was thinking that they would pan away or go to a studio shot like always and leave me going "DANG, I MISSED THE TRAIN!". Well, they didn't and let a train led by a DME and an ICE SD40-2 and a bunch of grain cars. Showed the whole thing in the snow, Pentrex quality.

Now, event number two:

On my local news KFVS-12 (www.kfvs12.com), Somebody got hung on a crossing in the snow near Chester, IL. The two occupants of the car got out and the train struck the car. So, I figured that would be sorta neat to pass along. 2 trains, 2 channels, 20 minutes.[:D]

I believe there was late report of a fatality-one of the passengers in a car hit by the plane.

That's a shame. What a horrible way to die (no joke). I mean really, "How did So and So die?" "So and So was killed by a plane...on the road." That would really suck, wrong place at the wrong time. I knew there were a couple people taken to the hospital, but I couldn't believe they both lived through THAT, so sad.

Sounds like you had some railfanning fun while watching TV. Lucky you!

"Did you see that news report?"
"No, I was watching the train in the background."

We actually never got wind of the plane accident up here, this was the only way I heard about it until my mum stumbled onto the story on CNN, which is not in the low channels here! No train, though.

I love the smell of ALCo smoke in the Morning. "Long live the 251!!!" I miss the GBW and my favorite uncle is Uncle Pete. Uncle Pete eats Space Noodles for breakfast.

Ordinary Person: "Homicides, rapes, carjacking (trainjackings if you are in California), theft, and crashes...how was your day?"

Railfan: "I SAW A TRAIN ON THE NEWS WITH A PLANE CRASH IN THE BACKGROUND!" [:D][^][8D][:)][:P][;)]

FYI... THe person who died was a six year old boy. The father of the six year old boy is also in very bad condition, but is expected to live. It's more tragic because Christmas is only two weeks away the family was on the way to grandparents house.

If the airlines are smart and want to avoid a lawsuit they will give the family millions of dollars and free flights.
