Definitely in 1869, althought the first air brake systems did not operate in the same way that the current system does.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

Google says that the first ones came into use in 1869, so it's either then or earlier. You see, I don't have this bank of knowledge in the early days...
