Does anyone know if the the line that runs through Yankton,South Dakota still has Trains on it? I was on Terraserver and all I see is what looks like a Trail.
Thanks,Allan.

BNSF just bought that line from the State of South Dakota (April 2005 ?) after leasing it since 1981. Perhaps you were looking at the former C&NW or GN ROWs that came in from the NE.

Look at page 13 of the August Trains.

Yankton was also as far west as CRIP got from NW Iowa/ Worthington, MN during the Black Hills gold rush. I think rail service will remain regardless of the RR operator there.

Are you sure ?
The only CRI&P lines I have seen on SD maps stop at Sioux Falls and Watertown.

There is nothing like that on my 1928 or 1948 Handy Railroad Atlas or in the November 1998 Pacific Rail News.

above quotes are from nanaimo73/ I'm having posting *issues* -Murphy Siding
CRIP didn't go to Yankton. Original line was Milwaukee Road. Great Northern came down from Sioux Falls. Track is now owned by the state, run by BNSF, and soon to be sold to BNSF. Rock Island barely got into eastern SD. Sioux Falls, and I think Watertown was about the extent of it. Gold rush was in 1876,rails came later.

Are Grain Trains the only thing that run this line?

Murphy and Naimo - Have the GLO Filing Maps and part of one old ICC Val Map related to a line in NE Iowa that I had responsibility for . Predecessor was Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern RR via Little Rock and Watertown. CRIP Dakota Division.

The abandonded Rock Island Line (BCR&N) runs through our parking lot at work. The rails are still there and clearly visible under the asphalt. The Milwaukee Road line forms the east property line, and the Illinois Central depot is accross the street. The CNW line is 1 block east, the Great Northern is 2. We have a lot more railroad past than railroad present, I guess.[:(]

Another new spelling. How about Dale ?
Rand McNally stopped publishing their Handy Railroad Atlases in 1988.
I think your best bet is the used magazine racks in hobby shops that handle a lot of train stuff.
Do you have the Steam Powered Video atlas for South Dakota ?
http://www.steam-powered-video.co.uk/acatalog/american_railroading_atlases_spv.html#aATDM
Did they save the best till last ?

As far as Mudchicken's line, it did not exist. The CRI&P did not operate a line into Yankton. The only possible explanation would be if they built the line and sold it to the GN before 1928-highly unlikely.
He must be talking about a line that was surveyed and never built or he has Yankton confused with another town.
Perhaps he could list some of the towns it passed through inside South Dakota.
