UP Road number 9604
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, September 27, 2005 4:32 PM
UP road no. 9604 passed through Bossier City, LA, this morning at about 7:30 am in a group of locos leading a train from Pine Bluff to Houston.

This engine has a placard of some sort on the short hood on the engineers side. What is this plaque for and what does it say? It looked rather large--at least 24" by 36". I was too far away to read it.

Thanks!

Are you sure it was 9604? 9400 and 9405 have plaques on them for 1000th GE whatever unit produced and a safety award respectively.

This one was somewhat ironic and humorous as a result.

Yep, it was the lead engine on the autorack, which ran into the rear of a stopped coal train with distributed power (remotely controlled engine in back). I've got a few more shots of the other engines which I need to get uploaded to rrpicturearchives.

Today I noticed another of these plaques on a loco as I drove onto the interstate in downtown Shreveport. I guess a lot of the UP engines have these, but I've never noticed them til now and I've seen hundreds of UP locos.

Actually, 9400 has had it's plaques removed for several years, that unit comes through here all the time, they are removed, see: http://uptrain.rrpicturearchives.net/locoPicture.aspx?id=41511 .
