What year was this type of locomotive built, and for the real smartys what type is it?

It is a UP 4-6-6-4 Fetters class Challenger the building of this class started in 1936 though this locmotive was built 1937.

...I'll say it's: UP Challenger 4-6-6-4 built between 1936 and 1944....Freight and limited use for passenger. Some design changes as years progressed.

The first 40 UP Challengers 3900-3939 were built in 1936 and 1937. They were later renumbered 3800-3839. There is a picture of 3939 (3839) on page 59 of the Jan. 1995 Trains.

Is it too late to guess 1933/Berkshire?

Definitely not a berk. Has the configuration of a Challenger, but doesn't look like one. I can eliminate, but not create. Other than that, I don't know.

No, it is not an Alleghany, which if I remember had a different airpump front arrangement and an unusuall headlight arrangement. It looks to me like one of the D&RGW Challengers that were built during WWII to UP designs. I suspect the date of construction was 1944. The D&H bought similar locomotives but their were some characteristic D&H details that made them appear slightly different.
