New York and Greenwood Lake Railway?
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, September 24, 2005 4:46 PM
Last night I saw a boxcar with a unique (to me anyway) paint scheme, under the moniker of New York
and Greenwood Lake railway, with a graphic depicting a sun (or moon, perhaps)over a tree lined lake.

I've been trying to find more info about the line, including some type of graphic for closer inspection (the train last night was fast, and it was dark) but all I can come up with via google pertains to a 19th century outfit...amybody know anymore about this line?

Yep, the lettering style on the side of the engine matches the way the boxcar was lettered, so i believe we have a match.

That engine picture looks a little aged....I'm wondering if what I saw was a relic from a fallen flag, or a ressurection?

It seems to be a recent spin-off shortline and I guess maybe a tourist railway as well.

The NY&GL began operating in late 1997 on the former Conrail Dundee spur. It has one of the last sections of strret running trackage in New Jersey. It starts in Garfield

and crosses the Passaic River on Half Moon Trestle.

There is a small article on page 10 of the April 1998 Railfan and Railroad which mentions power as RS3 935 and the lease of SW9 436 from the United Railroad Historical Society.

So then, do you think it would be a fair guess that somone has grabbed a nostalgic name to use for a shortline for sentimental reasons?

This boxcar I saw was a real trip. Looked fairly new. And what it seemed to look like, (given that the train was passing about 40 MPH, it was 9 PM, I was standing only about 15 ' from the train, and looked up only just in time to see the car roll past in the blink of an eye) as though the cars colorscheme was CNW yellow and green.

The entire background was similar to CNW yellow, perhaps just a tad more pastel (or faded, perhaps) with the lettering and the graphic of a lake scene (approx 5' X 5') all done in CNW like green outline.

The car was noteworthy to me because someone had obviously put some effort into developing an attention grabbing logo, all on a car owned by a little known railroad. just seemed a surprise in this day and age of thrift and tightened belts.

The orignal New York & Greenwood Lake was absorbed by the Erie long ago and its name was perpetuated as the timetable name of one of Erie/EL's suburban routes in New Jersey. The current shortline revives the name in a fashion similar to Wheeling & Lake Erie although I don't know if the current NY&GL uses trackage orignally operated by the original version.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul
