If anyone buys more thatn 5% ownership in a company, it has to be reported to the gov't. There has been no report, so what you understand (a rumor?) is false.

UP doesn't have the ca***o go buy a pack of Tastycakes, much less all of NS [:D]

NS will not fall to the "YOU PEE" toasters. YOU PEE will fall to NS's Toasters.

Not likely to happen. NS is fairly healthy and projected to get more so and STB isn't likely to approve it anyway.

Consider the source....

It does not seem believable to me. NS's stock value should be pretty high right now while UP's must be below maximum. UP needs to spend their cash on the Sunset route. Does not UP do a lot more interchange with CSX ?

Ok, well for starters I want to tell all other NS fans to not throw a cow yet or have a stroke!! If it is true that UP is buying some NS stock, they could be doing it for a number of reasons other than buying out NS. 1, They could be doing it to have more of an insider's view of NS so that they can understand NS better in the event that a future merger might occur, 2, so that they could have a head start in outbidding another railroad that might try to get NS, 3, to invest in stock that they think will eventually go up in value so that they can sell it later and make money off of it, or 4, they just want some stock to have a little controlling interest of NS.
It doesn't appear as if anything major is going to happen or will happen. I know we've all had round after round of merger talks in the last few months. And I still believe that no major merger will happen anytime soon. Give it at least 5 years before anything might happen. I could be wrong but I am pretty for sure that I'm right. Another thing, if NS and UP merge, it doesn't really matter who takes out who, they would both have to treat each other as equals and the paint schemes they have now would probably disappear for both railroads, so a merger is not a good idea for that reason and for a lot of other reasons.
Also, BNSF Railfan, if only your Uncle thinks that he might have heard about this stock purchase and nobody else on this entire forum hasn't heard about it then it's probably not going to happen. I'm not saying you're fibbing to us, I'm just saying that if it was true surely of all the people on this forum somebody else would have heard about it. But don't get mad at me because I know you're just reporting what you thought you heard, which is ok.

I just read the article on NS in the OCT. Trains. They have recovered from the Conrail takeover crisis, and are running a tight well oiled operation.I can't see them willing to merge with the big yellow sponge in the forseeable future.

And another thing, wouldn't UP want KCS which is right by them first before they thought about a massive merger with NS????? UP and NS merging right now will be a disaster because neither railroad will know what to do if this does occur. And besides, they'd have to convince the shareholders of both railroads who would both probably vote no and they'd have to convince the STB which would probably say No for now, and from what I've heard the Government is planning on making stricter laws for the merging of railroads.

A merger WILL happen in the next couple of years, but who knows what 2 companies will start it.For anybody to saw there won't be a merger is stupid.....many people have pointed out what could happen(like the article in TRAINS a couple months ago) but few people will come out right.

[:o)] [:p]

If anything it will be the Armor Yellow/Harbor Mist Gray that gets painted black. When ever the next merger happens the one set of colors that will still be around is the Black and White.

I checked NSRR historical price since 01/02/05 until now which BNSF fan should have done also & found that in 9 months it is + about $2.50 per share from its closing price on 01/02/05. If some party was buying up a large bloc (5%) of NSRR stock & holding it then NSRR has not responded to the large bloc of stock supposely being bought up & held by UPRR which is hard to understand since if you take 5% of stock off the market making less shares available for trading should really have boosted NSRR stock far more then NSRR stock has risen in almost 10 months[:o)]

i think it would be silly for them to merge if it happens it happens if it don't it don't
it doesn't hurt me none. I do i agree with nsrailfans first statment though.
I also think the railroads need to focus more on themselfs before they do'
any thing big.
I like NS but CSX has the B&O.
