UP air conditioner on CP?
Posted by trainboyH16-44 on Friday, September 9, 2005 12:28 PM
I was hitting balls at the driving range a couple of days ago, and a train went by. CPR, EB, 2 AC4400CWs. The lead one was a 8600 series (8646?) and had a yellow air conditioner. Do you think it was UP, or yellow primer? Do railroads trade locomotive parts?

This was asked over at the MR forums, I think it could be a UP AC unit that was on hand when it was in the shops, I remember seeing some BNSF pictures of exchanged AC units if different paint schemes,

or...

Could be a sign of infection, that engine or railroad will soon be assimilated into the UP [xx(]

I would guess that the engine was repaying horse power hours on the UP when the AC unit went out and the only thing we had was one of ours. So they replaced it.

The air conditioner is behind the cab on the conductors side, on top of what would be the walkway.

UP put a AC on a CP unit, but the bad unit is fixed and used on a UP unit again.
Nobody cares about paint the parts are just exchanged , next time in paintshop or in a shop were someone cares a few cans of rustoleum are used to make it yellow.

Thanks, That's what I thought. I have been seeing a lot of orange (BNSF) A/Cunits on the warbonnets lately (that or I keep seeing the same unit again and again)[;)]

[:O] The Santa Fe line across the desert is just about the last place I would want to be running without A/C.

Although it would be much worse in a steamer.[xx(]

I know for us (UP) it is illegal for a lead unit not to have a working A/C in the lead if there is one in the consist in Arizona. Everywhere else if we have a working A/C facing the right direction and it is a good "leader" we ask permission to move to the lead. Only if it don't delay train operations and we have a place to do it.

The SP had it in their agreement that the lead unit had to have A/C back in the 70's. It was a time claim against the carrier if they didn't. Oh the good ole days!

On AC4400CW the A/C is below the conductor's side of the cab; the Dash -8, and -9 have'em behind the cab on Co's side.
"There is nothing in life that compares with running a locomotive at 80-plus mph with the windows open, the traction motors screaming, the air horns fighting the rush of incoming air to make any sound at all, automobiles on adjacent highways trying and failing to catch up with you, and the unmistakable presence of raw power. You ride with fear in the pit of your stomach knowing you do not really have control of this beast." - D.C. Battle [Trains 10/2002 issue, p74.]
