Whining EMD Locomotives.

What causes an EMD to "Whine" at start up? It that the Turbo charger? I just love the sound of a Whineing Locomotive. I think that the SD60M's are the best. Those Mothers can realy Whine at a full Notch 8. Allan.

Actually the whine is caused by the turbosupercharger. The turbo on an EMD is geardriven until it reaches around notch 6 then the overrunning clutch disengages and then it is working as a turbo only.

No sound is greater than a turbo spoolin up! Specially on a diesel! I grin everytime i ma***he go pedal on mine!

I guess I'm off in my own little world again. I've always liked the exhaust sound from non-turboed EMD's. The roots huffers sound like they could move the world when they throttle up and get ready to go!

I like turbos, too, but accoustically, nothing matches the grunt and growl of an older non-turbo EMD.

The whine you hear while they are running may be the dynamic brakes howling. I hear a lot of that along the Front Range. It is cool to hear the dynamics howling and the horn echo through the valley that I live in. Those turbos do sound really nice as well.

I also like both... But I too like the non turbo. I grew up with EJ&E SD38-2s running through the back yard. I would love to still here that pulsing EMD power approaching in the darkness of a summer night.

The best turbo whine that I can remember came when the throttle was closed on a 539 or 244 engined locomotive, usually when kicking cars at Hammond yard on EL.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

you have a powrstroke adrian? 6.0 or 7.3? had both and loved them..........evt on the 6.0 is sweet. supposed to be a twin turbo 6.4 in 07...........sorry.....off topic.....

See that is one thing you can get from an EMD and not from a GE Locomotive. See......
GE's try to pretend to be an EMD because EMD has them beat by a long shot,LOL.

"Way back" as a teen I always enjoyed hearing Amtrak SDP40fs throttling up out of a station as well as hearing them blast by out on the mainline. That "whine" really gave those 16 cylinders character!

I remember, once they were shooting a movie at the train station in my town, so they had this train sit there silent waiting for the film crew to get ready, the locomotive was EMD model allthough manufactured in Croatia, can't remember which model. But it was turbocharged, so I herd it start up a couple of times since they have been shooting for hours and they turned the engine down when it wasn't used.

The scene was done in multiple takes, so for each take the engine would pull the train, and speed up as if it was going somewhere, then at about 100 meters it' would stop, then go back for another camera take. It was really funny seeing this train going forward and back all the time.

What is even more funny is that the scene got cut out of the film :)

This was the first time I heard an EMD diesel start up, I do love the turbo sound very much.

The whine in idling EMD locomotives is mainly due to the spur gears in the drive train that runs the turbocharger up to notch 6, and this is what is heard mainly during acceleration. When in idle, there is also a slight "ching ching" noise caused by the shock absorbing springs in the final gear that is involved in the engagement and disengagement of the clutch in the turbocharger drive. The clutch releases the turbocharger at notch 7 to be powered by the exhaust gas, and takes over drive as the engine is notched back. The turbocharger and its exhaust ducting act as a muffler and a turbocharged engine has a much less clear beat than the blower engines. As a result the gear whine, which should also be present in blower engines, is more obvious with the exhaust noise reduced.

As per my sig, I have a late 7.3L. The 6.0 has a nicer turbo whine to it though, but not enough to make me trade my massive grunt 7.3L.

Can't wait to test drive a 6.4L twin turbo.
