Hooray for Hoosiers !

Yesterday jhhtrainsplanes called for more good topics about railroads.
I would just like to say thank you to our Indiana members for starting so many good railroad threads.
Gabe, TheAntiGates, Modelcar, n_stephenson, MP173, pat30 and the rest have been doing a great job. Honourable mention to kschmidt (Wisconsin) as well for his EJE 666 thread.
Keep it up guys.

It does seem like we Hoosiers have set up an axis of evil, doesn't it? [:o)]

With all the great info you have provided , nanaimo73, you could be an honorary hoosier if you wanted..[;)]

And yet no one ever responded to my question about the hotel at Union Station in Indy. Do all the Hoosiers on the board live outside Indy???

I am a Hoosier, but just barely. Actually I am much closer to Chicago, emotionally and physically than Indy.

It is a great state...kinda boring at times, but there are times it feels good to be bored.

I have a Navy buddy who lives in Bloomfield, and aunt and some cousins who live in South Bend, and I live ten miles from where Knute Rockne's plane crashed. Does this count?
P.S. I have seen the Studebaker Mansion and have ridden the Chicago, South Shore, and South Bend three times while in the USNavy.

I am pert near a Hoosier.

Tharmeni....Sorry, didn't see the question on the Union Station Hotel....I haven't been there now for some years but know it was a Holiday Inn with railroad passenger cars attached to the hotel system {as part of the hotel}, but can not tell you if it is still in operation....If that is the question I might be able to find out......Thanks Nanaimo, for the good words....I am a transplant Hoosier...but have been here many years.

Sorry guys, but having had to drive from the Chicago area and southern WI to places such as Dayton, Cincy, Louisville and Lexington at least 90 gazillion times, I wouldn't mind if Indiana was deleted. Ah, I guess mabe that is too drastic. I'll compromise if the land covered by corn and beans is removed so our fine Hoosier members will still have a place to be.

....I thought you were going to mention the Indiana roads....which I think are the worst. I travel from around here to places in the east. Muncie city streets and our Delaware Co. roads are the pits....And no promise of them getting better. Seems taxes have been added in the past to state fuel tax but somehow that money never makes a difference. Just recently here in Muncie area a proposal was offered to establish a "wheel tax" of roughly 20 or so dollars per vehicle a year to provide 2 million or so annually in this area to "fix" and maintain our county and city roads....but it was turned down. So...now I suppose we revert back to business as usual.....Very bad conditioned roads for the foreseeable future.

Having grown up in the part of Chicago defined by my forum name, I often felt that I lived closer to Indiana than the rest of Chicago, the state line was only a mile and a half away from home, Mom and Dad routinely did grocery shopping in Hammond, etc. Still, I would never consider myself a Hoosier but some of my favorite trainwatching spots were in Indiana.

Paul:

What part of Chicago are you in now? Still the SE side? That is really a neat industrial area.

BTW, ever had a beef at Pepino's? It doesnt get much better.

Since I work in downtown Indy, you'd think I'd be able to answer the question about Union Station.... BUT.......I haven't noticed the rail cars or anything, but I've only been by in a freight train or driving by on the street. One of these days I'll actually walk around and explore.

And thanks for the kudos! [;)]

I moved out of Hegewisch quite a few years ago and my parents just recently moved out for an assisted living community. I'm currently located about a mile and a half south of Clearing's hump.

The whole Calumet area is still an interesting industrial area but like everything else it was a lot better when more of the steel mills and refineries were still in business.

Best beefs are at Portillo's at Archer and Harlem.
